Within the week, i'm planning on picking up 5-6 sheets of 1/2" drywall at 10' length (specifically). Ideally, it would be nice to fit the 48" sheets flat in the bed with the tailgate down and sheets supported by (2) 2x4x10's. Not the case, as the width between the wheel wells is a few inches short of 48". So, they'll have to sit on top of the wheel wells, which is fine in the bed but at 10', i would imagine they'll have to be supported differently. I was thinking of a cantilevered support system, but not sure how to approach it yet. I could put 2x6's in the well cutouts and support that way, but still need support beyond the bed to prevent cracking the drywall in the 5 mile drive back to my house.

I'm sure i'm not the first person to try this with a taco, so I figured I'd throw the question out. Anyone try this before?

Also...not necessarily relegated to 3rd Gens as I believe 2nd gen has same bed dimensions too.

Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
Personally, I would do one of two options before trying to get 10' drywall home in the bed: rent/borrow a trailer or rent the store truck (if Home Depot or the like).

It won't lay flat and with that many sheets and that much weight wagging out there, you're going to crack it.

Hitch mounted kayak rack? Unless you have kayaks or have another use for it, I'd do the trailer or truck option.

Boards in the weel well cutouts, then a couple 2x6 or a sheet of ply sticking out 10’ and drywall on top. The wood under should keep it sturdy enough if u have the long bed, shortbed might be iffy. Rent the home depot van/truck for 20$ and do it that way

2x6 across the front of the bed in the slots. Then a sheet of 8’ plywood before loading the drywall. The 2’ of overhang won’t crack.

ive done it several times with 10' sheets and 2x4x10's underneath with the tailgate up. a bit ghetto but works and it was only about a 3 mile drive .

Thanks for the input. Worst case, my neighbor offered his 5 day old Chevy 1500, which I appreciate and will consider, but I'd hate to dirty his new truck.

I like this. Tie down on the bed towards the back (front) of the bed and maybe add a 5 gallon bucket of mud for counter weight...

Nice setup and is what I was thinking of. Is this off the shelf or custom? I see a sticker.

8 sheets of ultralite 12 foot. I made a long frame from 2x4's and 4x4 with cross pieces every 2 feet. this frame was angled from the bottom front of the box and sat on top of the tailgate. I used a 2.4 on the bottom of the frame where it crossed the tailgate so the weight was spread across instead of concentrated on the spots where the 2x4 frame would have contacted the tailgate. I only had a mile and half to go though.

Put your 2x6 crossbraces down and strap it down. Screw down a 4x8 sheet to thise cross braces. Put the drwall down and strap it down. 2’ overhang will be fine. If you dont want to use 4x8 plywood, screw down 10’ 2x4s and put drwall on that. You could even screw a stopper at the end of the 2x4x10’
