Gotcha. Yeah that Dirt Designs coil bucket kit is super nice for people that still have their coil buckets. Definitely worth the money.

I did it. Ive got pics of my tub/frame some where on here, but here is one for you.A1976F42-EAAF-4599-81A2-ED6F32F53871.jpg

Plated the inside, outside and bottom. If I where to do it again I would have just cut out that entire section of frame a welded in a new channel offset to the inside to get the room you would need. You would also need to pay attention to having enough room for exhaust on the inside side of the frame at that point though. Im on 35s and I still barely rub the frame.

This is awesome! Pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Any issue with frame twisting or breaking? And what thickness is that plate?

Its been over a year and so far so good. I think I ended up with 1/4" on the inside and bottom and 3/16 on the outside.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
I sometimes forget the obvious the only way your going to be able to do this correct is with the engine out .

To be able to see and be comfortable welding the inside on such a important weld.

Much easier to just wait and do your SAS

Ouch. I wonder if that was from not running fender liners with the stock intake, since he's got those big ol' tires. The fender liner is the only thing keeping dirt/water/debris from getting sucked in. I've seen a 2nd gen nearly hydrolock once by doing that through a puddle, because he removed his liners to fit 35s. Stalled dead in the water but he got lucky though...the air filter soaked up enough of it that it restarted with the filter removed.
He installed a snorkel a week or later

Most likely. I’ve been planning on either swapping out my oem air tube for a K&N style and using one of these or just using one cut to wrap around the stock inlet minus the “snorkel”. They’re hydrophobic so they’ll repel water to a certain degree - not completely submerged but probably enough to keep a dip or big splash from filling your cylinders.

The dudes that notch the frames as you showed in your OP aren't exactly stressing their frames. They're street trucks for all show and no go.

Seems like a serious compromise to the frame just for a temporary fix. Just SAS it.

The c-notch can also be used to get greater up-travel out of a spring under swap

You'll see often the frame is the limiting factor in up travel on SUA and linked trucks and will get notched (more aggressively than this often) instead of back-halving the vehicle. Beamed trucks will sometimes have a notched taken out of the frame on the bottom too. They always have to be reinforced of course.

Suggest to avoid hacking on the frame with scabbing on some steel in the hopes it won't fail.

Better to just move your SAS forward.

Frames are not simple components in a truck. They need to flex, be stiff, handle loads, absorb road/off-road loads, absorb collision impacts......

This "modification" falls into the group of "can I do it" or "should I do it". Many times what you can do isn't the same as what you should do.

    Your truck, your choice.

I agree and that part of the frame is pretty unique, but his friend that works on his truck is a pretty talented fabricator and welder. That said, without having done a SAS myself like @slander or @malburg114 I'd go with their advice.
