I have a 2008 base model single cab 5 lug four banger. Ive toyed with the idea of pulling out the 4banger and dropping in a 2nd ten 6cyl like the ones in the runner. The single cabs look so much better than the extended cab x runner. It would be cool to build this up.

No mud flaps, plasti dipped emblems, and rear bumper, Weather tech digital fit, Bed mat from tractor supply. Pioneer 4400BH head unit. B.A.M.F bed rail tie downs. AVS vent visors.
Engine mount locations are most likely different. and you may have to do new trans as well?? idk if it’s the same or not.

shouldn't be too bad, just need to fab some custom engine mounts and a trans cross member. Then figure out the wiring.

X-Runner is a 5-lug, so the frame is going to be identical.
Only difference would be the same as the differences between the Access Cab 5 lug 2.7 vs 4.0
Would need a new engine and trans, and the electronics will be a PITA, but I'm sure it'll be possible.

your best bet would be to get a totaled truck from an insurance auction. This provides you with the engine, transmission, and most importantly and hardest part, the wiring.

    Agreed.

I believe the XRunner has an "X" brace in the frame, someone correct me if I am wrong, but I am wondering if there are any other differences that may come into play.

I have seen a 4.0 swapped into a first gen Tacoma. I didn't look very close at the details, but I know the frame mounts were custom built.

I would guess that custom frame mounts would be needed, and the rest would just be having the needed parts available. A wrecked truck would be best for donor parts.

The "X-brace" is at the rear, runs across the rear bumper at the hitch area and sweeps forward around the spare to the area of the shock mounts.

It stiffens the rear of the frame.

Hellwig swaybar is more noticeable ;)
