Anyone ever swapped out the transmission themselves?

After 250K miles and 16 years of relative care free driving I am now having transmission issues with my 06 double cab TRD off road (2wd). I think I have Torque converter problems when shifting to overdrive 4th to 5th. No problem when I shift manually or accelerate hard but it shifts really rough between 4th and 5th when accelerating lightly. I am trying to decide on just changing the converter or putting in a rebuilt trans. I know the smart choice, but the wallet is light.

I saw a post about DR Trannys instant shudder fix. I thought it would be worth 20 buck to give that a try.

I am considering just replacing the torque converter (<500.00) but I know the right thing to do is put in a rebuilt transmission. If I but a rebuild and install it myself I can probably be done for about $2K. Shop would add about a grand to that.

Has anyone out there swapped a gen2 transmission? Special tools? I cant find much on line, but I did find an installation manual from auto zone. Calls for a SST090253-12701 tool to disconnect the oil cooler inlet tube. And a "intelligent tester tool".
Is this the same thing that reads ck engine light issues?

    Is this just resetting memory?

    Below are the instructions:
    1. Perform the automatic transmission initialization procedure when replacing the automatic transmission, engine or ECM.

    2. On the A750E automatic transmission, initialization is performed using the intelligent tester tool.
    3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
    4. Connect the intelligent tester tool together with the controller area network vehicle interface module (CAN VIN) to the DLC3.
    5. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    6. Push the intelligent tester tool main switch to the ON position.
    7. Select the items, DIAGNOSIS/ENHANCED OBD II.
    8. Perform the reset memory procedure from the ENGINE menu.
Ill go buy a Chiltons before starting the project.

BTW I live in Indianapolis but this was a California truck, no rust, its clean and its paid for. Thinking about passing it on to my son and getting a newer Tacoma.

You don't need any special tool. The biggest pains when I swapped my were taking starter out to unbolt converter to flywheel bolts and the upper transmission screw.

I did it alone while doing my 4x4 conversion, if you have the mechanical habilities and a transmission jack you should be able to do it in two days, if you get a second hand maybe 1 day.

    Thanks Gearcruncher
I'm going to try the fluid change and lubegaurd before I do anything else.
I'll let you know how it goes.

I would love to have the kind of time to do such a thing. But I don't.

Would love to slap a 7-Speed on this truck.

    Hey Gearcruncher,
Changed out ATF and added some lubegaurd. She's running smooth again. Honestly I really didn't expect it to work considering 250k on the truck. But I figured what do I have to loose. 30 bucks vs 3000. Thanks for you words of wisdom. If you ever get down to Indy look me up I'll buy ya a beer.
