Both my 1GEN tundras 4.7 V8s got the same mpg as what I'm getting in my 06 4.0 auto 4x4 DC Tacoma, so I don't know where folks think the older gen gets bad mpg.

Maybe the 5.7 likes the gas, by the year range the OP wants to buy is an 04.
The 04s also had the 4 speed vs the 05-06 5 speed vvti fwiw. That engine/trans was smooth.
Towing mpg stinks in both models imo.

I had a '98 ext. cab 4x4 5spd taco as my first car/truck. I traded that up when I bought a bass boat and bought a '01 access cab 4x4 Tundra. It was a nice truck and did a good job hauling the boat around. Now that I have sold my boat I have gone back to a first gen taco as I like it a lot better for everyday driving and don't need the towing capacity anymore. I also couldnt stand the auto in the tundra as everything i own is a manual. Auto's are just boring IMO. I would buy another one if I needed a bigger truck but for everyday running around and pulling small stuff occasionally, the 1st gen taco is perfect for me.

Just traded my Tacoma for a '10 Tundra 4.6L 4x4. I wanted more room to haul my motorcycle and the new 4.6 gets about the same mileage as the 4.0L Tacoma (from what I've read). Only 60 miles on it so far, so I have my fingers crossed!
