    vht nightshade.
    some people use these steps:

spray vht nightshade to the darkness you desire
spray lots of clear coat to protect the paint
sand it down using 1500grit to get the orange peal effect away
    use rubbing compound
then wax it till it gets it shiny.

I used House of Color black Car Paint that was thinned out. Three light coats and 3 coats of car grade clear. THey are glossy and VERY dark but the light shines through VERY well.

i guess i dont get it. the trucks look great! but the brake lights are for safety, right? i would want them brighter, not dimmer.

i drive regularly in very dense fog..i want my brake lights simmering bright.

I think its safer (my veiw) because during the day they are still super bright and change from black to red. People can see I'm braking easier. also It passes all DOT tests in brightness.

EDIT: But I completely understand where you are coming from about the safety issue if you were to do them too dark.

I don't get why people sand down the VHT stuff. It doesn't say anything about sanding or adding clear on the instructions. It's all in how you spray it.

I have tail light covers if you want them, OP.

We wet sanded mine and didn't use a clear coat, and they're perfectly fine still.... They do seem to be becoming less black and more of a purple tho :(

Might have to redo mine soon. Btw we used VHF niteshade on mine.

I used VHT Niteshades to do mine. 3 coats plus 3 coats of clear. They are about the same shade as my windows BUT be careful and leave time between coats or you may over do it. I almost didn't pass inspection.

I have used VHT in the past and it turns purple over time, so I'd personally steer clear. The best results will come from using black / clear mixture. Another option is a layover like lamin-x.

No need unless it instructs you to.. so why the extra work? It's in the rear so it's not going to be hit by bugs and rock chips. Just keep them waxed.
