I am moving to northern Idaho in a few weeks from Cali and its a 20+ hour drive. My wife makes me nervous and gets very tired after 6-8 hours of driving so I was thinkin about possibly renting a car trailer and towing her 4Runner behind my Taco. I searched online but could not actually find a real life scenario of anyone doing this lol. Logistically it seems like it would work. Has anyone ever tried anything like this? I have only towed a 20" jet boat and pop up camper so I am a newb at towing.

2017 Tacoma TRD OR DCLB w/ tow package + OVTune ( towing capacity 6,400lbs )
    2018 4Runner TRD OR (4,800lbs )

The trailer rental place likely would not allow you to rent the trailer.

You are going to be at or over the towing of the Tacoma with a 4runner and those ungodly heavy rental trailers. I towed an XJ crawler with a V6 frontier and an aluminium trailer its not something I would ever want to do again. Yes it could pull it at mostly highway speeds but it wasn't fun to stop with really good trailer brakes. If you are a self admitted towing newb. I'd just take the longer drive time and stay safe. Biggest thing on long drives is talking and engaging keeps you alert.

Hell, your bed won't be empty I'm sure.

And the 4 runner will be stuffed full, you will be over weight on that taco very quickly. I'm sure it will pull it, slowly and not the most fuel effective... but it'll stop like hell, and that's what scares me the most. I wouldn't do it. You're dancing around payload capacity already, and not even accounting for the weight of the trailer... u haul trailers are not light....

    Too few to list.
Out of topic but from HB to Idaho? That's a big change.
I never towed a 4Runner but I do know they are on the heavy side and you're right on the mark with about 4,800 lbs. Depending on what trailer you're using, most likely be over your towing capacity. I've used the auto transport from U-haul plenty of times and that thing weighs 2,210 lbs alone. I've used U-haul's tow dolly (750 lbs) but that's towing a FWD.
I've also driven to Idaho and the road is not flat going that way. Many hills and mountain passes to deal with.
I'd say drive both and just take plenty of stops.

Agreed that you will easily exceed the towing limits of your Tacoma.

A flat full car trailer from u-haul weights in at 2210 lbs, like DriverSound said, which uses up a lot of your capacity right there.

Caffeine pills or lots of short days would be the way I went if I was in your shoes.

I cold be worth doing the tip twice... drive the taco and a cardio trailer out with you and your wife in it then fly back for the 4runner and another load. That way you guys aren't driving alone

The uhaul trailer is 2200 pounds. Pretty sure uhaul won’t rent you one.

    https://www.uhaul.com/Trailers/Auto-Transport-Rental/AT/

You could have the 4runner shipped.

Also, think about some good GMRS radios to keep the conversation going along the way. My little Baofeng came with a PTT earpiece which is very nice to have.

Born and raised in HB and its changing faster than I can keep up with. Homes are $600k+ , takes an hour or more to get just about anywhere cause all the traffic and the liberal laws and people here are driving me bananas. I bought a house up in Idaho for $210,000 , everything is cheaper, people are way nicer, traffic is non existent and its a very red state which makes me feel all warm and fuzzy lol.

Have you considered just paying for it to be shipped?
Shipping cost - (would-be gas) - (hotel if you stop) = small investment for safety, company, and completing the journey in one fell swoop.

Edit: answer received as I was typing. $1,300 is pricey.

    - tow the taco with the 4R. Push it to the limit is wife's car.
    - sell the taco and buy a Ford/GMC/RAM full size.
    - divorce present wife, find new one in Idaho.
    - ask mother-in-law to drive the 4R
    - IDK. Ran out of ideas to make fun of you...
