I'm still running 7, I've messed around at Best Buy with 10 on the computers, but I'm not a big fan. Maybe I need to mess around with it more?

+3 on Samsung 840-850 EVO SSD drive. They run cooler, use less power and allow much more responsive boot up and application launch times.

Their downside however and this is where HDD's shine is their overall storage capability over SSD's so if space is a requirement to you for the cheap HDD is the way to go. Also if you run Photoshop and perform many benchmark tests on hard drives you will find that HDD's often beat out SSD's in conversion rates when it comes to converting movies, photos, and large files. (So I remember reading back in the day in 2012) Things may have drastically changed now so who knows, but regardless, I have switched to SSD already. I also dropped the drive bare once recently too and it's still alive and kicking because there is nothing to go bad basically.

Be aware though that you should perform perodic backups because they can fail without warning unlike HDD's.

If you aren't planning on using your laptop for intensive sort of stuff and more for pleasure and messing around the SSD drive is a great upgrade for it to really energize it.

That's why you get an SDD for your OS/software and an HDD for storing music/photos/documents.

Win 10's better than 8.1 but takes some getting used to. I wouldn't say the interface is better than 7, but it does seem to boot more quickly and it's the way of the future. Don't wait too long to upgrade from 7 as "free" part goes away this summer.

Or better yet, an online NAS. But I digress.

Typically the HDD gives you an indicator that it is going to fail before it does. Usually clicking since it is a electro mechanical device. Unlike SSD which is all eletronic circuitry soldered onto a PCB.

If you're going to continue to run 7, make sure you disable auto defrag. SSD drives do not require it and it will reduce the life of the drive due to limited read/write cycles.

If you need good free cloning/imaging software, this is what I use:

    http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

Samsung or Crucial SSD's will probably include some drive cloning software though. I use the above to image my drive periodically. Damn good stuff for free!

Hi OP. I'm not too sure about the e6400 but I'm figuring its not that much different. I have an e6440 that I just ordered a Samsung Evo 850 500gb msata. This will be installed as a second drive in the location msata slot right above (when laptop is opened and upside down) the wwan slot. I will be configuring it to be the boot drive and retain the oem HDD as either a backup or a data only drive.
Just mentioning an possible option. I should receive and have the drive installed by the 3rd.

Totally worth upgrading to ssd. Newegg has samsung evo 850 for $271. It was the single best upgrade to increase performance of my PC and my laptop.

It's difficult to clone the drive over without a dedicated hard drive cloner which I got for $25 on Amazon. The software stuff that's available for free seem to be hit or miss reviews, while the dedicated hard drive cloner has worked 100% of the time in the past dozen or so clones I've done.

I've run into issues that the laptop was too old to recognize an ssd, but the laptop has windows Xp on it and was from 2008. If you have a laptop that's less than 5 years old, go for the upgrade.

Well the mSATA Evo 850 and Sabrent mSATA hard drive enclosure arrived today. After a 3 hour cloning of the drive using Samsung's Drive Mitigation software I can claim success! The Samsung software is a free download off Samsung's ssd website.
I did run into some difficulties with the usb. A little research and I discovered that on my system there are power saving settings on the usb. I also went into the bios setup and unchecked the Enable USB 3.0. This was based on other information I found on the net. This worked and my usb worked constantly through the cloning.
After the cloning, I installed the drive and selected it as the first drive to boot.

I notice the boot speed, software, and page loading improvement right away. I ran the 'Windows Experience' test and it had gone from 5.9 to 6.7. Can't wait to see what happens when I double the RAM!

As far as your e6400, the research I did does indicate that there is a WWAN slot next to the WLAN. If your are using the WWAN (cellular connection) you will have to find a different solution.

You should open it up and verify that there is a vacant WWAN slot in your laptop prior to purchase.

    Good Luck!

Absolutely worth it. About 3 years ago I upgraded a 2010 Macbook Pro with a samsung SSD and it was like night and day. Boots in about 10 seconds.

As an I.T. guy I have used this Laptop with an SSD max ram and an i7 processor. Its a pretty solid rig even for its age. Get an 850 EVO it has a 10 year warranty.
Edit: May have been a newer E6500 model.
    Always keep backups!
