Not just boot time will increase but SSD's are more reliable and are more efficient than your standard hard drive

Installed the Samsung 850 evo ssd on my lap top and it's awesome. Boots so much faster and it's just feels snappy quick. I also re-did the thermal paste in my laptop.

    idle temps before new paste
idle before new paste with ssd install.jpg

Idle after new paste (arctic cooling mx-4)
    idle after new paste.jpg

    under load before paste
    under load before new paste.jpg

    under load new paste
under load watching 4k new paste.jpg

not sure that the temp drops makes a whole lot of difference, but i figure it's better to run about 10-15 degrees cooler than hotter.

SDDs are like the single greatest upgrade you can make to your PC, Yes boot times speed up, but also all your applications will run smoother and faster. I have ran a SSD as my main drive with HDDs as storage for a long time. I just recently installed 2x Samsung 250gb as my main drives in a RAID format, you think one is fast, Try two working together! I also run 6x3TB HDDs for Plex Media storage. Needless to say a SDD will bring a old laptop new life!

I work IT and for the past 3 years we have speced all of our PCs with SSDs. Out of 1000 machines, better than half have them now. Dramatic improvement for startup and logon times.

I was watching some videos on youtube and the guy on Hardwarecanucks had mentioned that on one of his builds, using two 256 gb ssd's. I bought mine before I saw his build and I installed on my laptop, so I think I would have had to remove the optical drive to have too, but it's so much faster than before!

Yeah, Laptops are a bit tougher to run two in but its possible. They make cages for certain brands. With the cost of SSDs now, its worth it

Not really, Its my gaming run but it is also a full Media server that I share out with my friends and to all my devices. I have the whole system setup to automate TV and Movies as they come out, Like DVR sorta, using various software.

Anyone have a screw driver set that they like for laptops and computer stuff? I ordered a precision screw driver set from Amazon, but it's cheap Chinese shit. The bits do not even fit inside the screw driver and it's made for smart phones and tablets. The Philips head wouldn't even fit my laptop screws to open it up.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
Fun fact about RAID solid state disks: you saturate the SATA bus long before getting to max bandwidth off both disks. I also run 2x 240's in RAID0. This is why the m.2 and PCI solid state disks are growing in popularity: you're bypassing the limitations of the SATA controller.

Spinning rust -> SSD is the best upgrade you can do, assuming RAM is adequate for your needs

Basically the SATA controller (what handles all the data going in and out of the disks) on a consumer machine will be the bottleneck before drives in RAID0 (using multiple drives together for better capacity and speed) would be.

A good benchmark I found is for new logons. They always take longer because a profile has to be built. I built a Win 10 image on machines with i3s, 4 GB RAM, and 320 GB 7200 RPM spinning drives (3-4 year old desktops, the last ones we purchased without SSDs). Logon times for new users were horrendous--a little over a minute. Swapped them over to SSDs, used the same image, and that time dropped to 10 seconds. Bootup is also significantly quicker. If a user has used that particular PC before (so they already have a local profile), it literally flashes to the desktop in one second after entering your password.

Side benefit: We used to get some hard drive failures from time to time on laptops, presumably because moving them while they're on isn't great for a spinning hard drive. Since going with SSDs, we have had no failures.

How much do you want to spend lol? I have a set of Wiha precision screwdrivers that is awesome for small phillips and slotted stuff. Like you I have one of the cheap chinese shit (found at grocery stores) and the Wiha blows it out of the water.

This is basically what I have (i dont remember the set number)

I've heard all the pc guys saying "RAID0" on their builds and I figured that's something I need to google.

My boot time was decreased dramatically. Programs load faster. I'm not a gamer so I can't say it will help there. The machine is way more quiet, you won't have all the noise of the disk access.
