If my area was that dangerous for my family, I would move hell and earth to get out of there. That is the safest thing for them. No DIY armor, no new truck, just gone. Different job, long commute, inflated housing costs, whatever it took. They don't have to live like that. Whatever is keeping you there, I would re-evaluate it's importance.

Have you considered the added weight? Picture going uphill…painfully slowly, all while being peppered by a .380 from someone that wants to jack your Tacoma.

Post videos of your pre install ballistics testing.

How about wrapping the truck in razor wire? Not bullet resistant, but no one will want to try to walk up to the window or door. Probably keep people from parking too close also.

just sticker your truck using those do-it-yourself letter kits with unrelated anti-government quotes taken entirely out of context to attempt to make a point that no one else can understand.

    no one messes with crazy.

If you would have ended your post here people might be more helpful. It's an expensive and almost entirely unnecessary modification to the truck that serves little purpose but so does a lot of the "overlanding" crap guys strap on.

This is the stuff that makes people think you're just an idiot. Bio/chemical filters won't do anything on a truck that isn't hermitically sealed when the doors are shut. Anti-grenade mesh - car jackers don't stuff grenades in exhaust pipes. Smokescreen - fun stunt but worthless in real life.

Op also needs to use Zimmerit, that way magnetic mines won't stick to the truck. Will work as sound deadener also. Plus it will provide some thermal protection to help keep the truck cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Actually, one inch good Lexan will stop a couple rounds of 9mm before cracking, the bigger the plate is in diameter, the longer it will hold up. Put it in a good frame to control the cracking and splitting and it will take more rounds. I've done it with some sections that were removed from one of our bill paying sites. True bullet ''proof'' glass is stupidly heavy and depending on thickness and how many laminations of glass/film there are, it can hold up to pretty significant amounts of serious firepower. [I have some 2.5-3 inches thick] Even plain old glass is extremely hard on bullets, if you want to seriously increase the actual door metal portion from a bullet pass thru then roll the window down into the door.

Vertical automotive glass does not do much to stop or affect the bullet penetration or trajectory. Angled windshields are a different matter but proper bullet selection mitigates that fairly well.

But it’s fun seeing all the weapons fetish people and enforcement best practices cosplayers come in to lay down some truths.

“I probably would move my family to a different planet before adding a flame thrower to my truck.”

“LAPD’s current squad cars remind me how I read on the internet how different types of 2” thick polyurethane-enhanced LEGO bricks, which if stacked correctly, can take three blasts of buckshot at 15’…”

    “I’m not single.”

Auto glass is stupidly hard on bullets. [well, the first bullet anyways] Ceramic is a close relative of glass and is used in most quality level 4 armor [or heavier weight steel that is hardened] along with a wrap to hold it together so it can withstand additional hits and to act as a spall catch.

In the end, the OP would be better served by wearing a quality 3a or even a level 4 vest with side panels if truly worried about rifle fire. It would also be cheaper, and could be used away from the vehicle so it's role would be moved from one place to any place the wearer went.

[and yes, I have 3a and level 4 vests, the 3a is pretty easy to wear even with steel strike plates, the level 4, well, it's a PITA until you get hit, then it's worth it's weight in gold. One of the vests I bought my son is VERY thin for a 3a with very good coverage, easily worn under even a light shirt, the carrier basically looks like a thick Tee shirt without the sleeves. And no, it wasn't cheap.
