I notice all the high mileage claims, are mostly from the Pre-Runners.....

I average 18-19.5 mpg, with an egg under the go pedal. However, the speedometer is off on many of these trucks. Mine says I'm going about 4 mph faster than I really am. This will register more miles per tank than actually traveled, skewing the numbers. Stock wheels and tires btw.

mpg has to be calculated over a long period during fill-ups, preferably at the same gas station, with same fill-up technique. Using a device that indicates mileage as you move along is flawed. My 99 Durango had one of those built-in and would show 20 mpg on flat road surfaces, but the true average (measured during fill-ups) was about 14 mpg- fwiw.

I see what you are saying about a lot of the built in mileage gauges that come with cars being optimistic. However, my calibrated scangauge is accurate to a tenth of a gallon when I fill up at the same pump.

    About what I get
    16.9 with 70/30 Hwy/City

When I read here and see people say they used hi test gasoline and their mileage improved dramatically I know that they are full of it, they did a one time read with conditions favorable at that time or they are just full of it

    +1, my Scangage is dead-on.
If you are concerned about your fuel mileage AT ALL, get a ScanGage. It will answer your questions.
FWIW, I'm getting 19.5mpg on my first tank since my supercharger install earlier this week. City-country type driving, I stay about at the speed limit (30-50mph). Last evening I took a 60 mile trip on interstate type road at 70mph and averaged 22mpg. Pre-ScanGage my mileage was in the 16-17 range. It really shows you where you are wasting fuel.

I noticed a couple mpg gain when I took those big ass mudflaps off, replaced the stock TRD Offroad wheels with the TRD FJ wheels, added a TRD CAI and Exhaust. I avg. 20-21 on the highway and 18.5 - 19.5 combination. Like everyone else, if you keep it below 70mph, the mileage really increases however, that isn't for everyone. Just my 2cents

I get 18 to 20 MPG in mine. I change the oil and to the maintence when its supposed to be done. I think that keeps my wifes truck getting decent mileage. A secret that seems obvious but a lot of people neglect is tire pressure. You have to keep up with that and it will help MPG, even if only slightly.

My mpg sucks, I'm getting about 13-15 right now. I know its winter and it has been a cold one this year. I do drive about 70-80 so I know that has something to do with it but 13-15 really?????

How can SO many people be getting 13mpg and you get over 20mpg. I could understand if it was a pre runner but its not.... the mpg cannot be that far apart... unless there is something wrong with the truck.

I'm sorry but i dont believe anyone that says they get over 17mpg. I have never even saw 15 mpg.

I have a Prerunner and have gotten a constant 17/18 MPG while babying the truck. I think I hit somewhere like 18.8 mpg one time but it was road trip on the interstate with cruise on the entire tank.

My lift really didn't seem to hurt my MPG too much... maybe .5 mile per gallon tops.

I got 23mpg last tank with mixed city/freeway driving. I just put new bfg long trail 245/75/16s on the truck. I was so surprised I am tracking my mileage again this week--just put a tank in a few days ago and once I hit 300 miles I will fill up again and check the stats.

Got a Scangauge? I do and it gives me a great deal of insight into fuel mileage. I have it set to report average fuel mileage for each trip. In other words, it starts again each time I start the engine. I also display engine temperature.

I have learned that until engine reaches full temperature, mileage stinks. After several miles starting with a cold engine, I'm lucky to break 15 mpg. However, make a stop and start again with a warm engine and I can achieve 20+ mpg for what I'd describe as a suburban driving circuit. OTOH, every time I hit a stop light, I can watch the average drop a couple tenths of a MPG waiting for the light to change. Accelerating away from the light could cost another tenth.

The second advantage of the Scangauge is that it shows me exactly how my driving habits affect fuel mileage. By tailoring my driving carefully I probably pick up at least 1 mpg and probably more.

You can draw a couple of conclusions from this.

    1) If you only drive short distances, your mileage is going to be dominated by cold engine mileage which stinks.

    2) If you drive where there are a lot of traffic lights, mileage will suffer as a result.

    3) Your particular driving habits will also have a big impact. If you're typically at the head of the pack pulling away from red lights, you will probably not achieve the best potential fuel mileage.

There are good reasons for a wide variation in fuel mileage.

Incidentally, the best mileage achieved on our truck was a 35 mile trip where my wife really watched the Scangauge and achieved 26 mpg. She also irritated a few people behind us. I regularly get 20-22 mpg per trip if I start with a hot engine and don't hit too many traffic lights. I accelerate like I've got an egg between my foot and the throttle but I manage to stay with traffic.

    As always YMMV :D
