22 consistently. Being 62 and driving like it is the reason.

I dont know if you noticed, but my 20MPG is 99.9% highway.

The people getting 13 MPG for highway, are either heavily modded or dont know how to control the gas pedal.

When I do 99.9% city driving, I get ~10 MPG.

    hahah, nice. ^^^

I guess being 30, with a 6" lift and over sized tires doesn't help fuel mileage, eh???

Well guess what girls....You don't lift a truck and then think about fuel mileage. I lifted my truck 4 years ago, and FINALLY in the last month worked out the fuel mileage I was getting. Who cares??? You can't have fuel economy, and a sweet ride at the same time. My S Class Benz gets about the same as the Tacoma.....again, you pay for it in luxury/safety.
(The Prelude probably gets better fuel mileage...but I have never worked it out)

Kept track of my mileage on a consistent basis for a while. The sudden change in average on 11/08/08 is from new tires, went from the stock 265/65/17 up to BFG A/T in 265/70/17. After I did this I gps verifed my speedo and it was tits on, which means it was slightly off at stock. The two large increase are an all-freeway road trip in which I was doing 60 mph. The drop in red is when I was in 4x4 for a good portion of the tank:

I run a 100 mile round trip to work everyday on the freeway. 90% freeway, 10% street driving. I get on an average 22mpg. This is driving about 75 mph. I noticed on a long trip I decided to run the truck at 90 mph and got about 15 to 17 mpg. So speed definetly affects milage. This is on an 07 double cab pre runner long bed sport with stock 17 inch rims and tires.

Even 20 mpg here (US gallons), tank after tank, on premium fuel (no ethanol). All due respect to the earlier poster, that's a real number. I calculate mileage from full to full, no estimating.

I drive secondary roads, lots of hills here but no high speeds. DCLB, auto, V6 with a tonneau cover. The only time that number varies is if I'm driving in the city, or in 4WD for extended periods.

I keep asking myself why I sold my 2009 F150 Supercrew 4x4 to get a sardine box that gets worse gas mileage than a Ford 4x4 !?!?!? Can anyone make me feel better and insure me that I made the right decision? I got near 600 miles per tank of gas in my F150 and only about 400 on my Tacoma 4x4 double cab. I know the tank in the F150 is bigger but by only 5 gallons.

What kind of mileage did you get on your Ford? What are you getting on your Taco?

It really depends on what you use the truck for. If you don't need a full size, why have one? They're more expensive to own. Not just gas mileage, but fluids, tires, etc.

The biggest thing is that your Toyota won't be in the shop near as much as a Ford would be over its life. Tacoma's resale value is on par or better than Ford's, even after the recall fiasco.

    BTW nice first post.

I have only driven one tank of gas on my Tacoma so far but having to go to the tank within a few days is not a good sign. I figure I got about 15 mpg with the first tank. I dove literally for 2 weeks on the dealers first fill up on my F150. The digital display on the F150 said I got about 21.5 mpg on the hwy and 14.5 in the city. Yeah, I understand if you do not need a full sized truck why have one but I also look at why pay the same for a truck that is half the truck? Yeah, I lost my ass when I sold the F150 and realize that their resale value is terrible. I sold my Tacoma Double Cab Off Road 4x4 last year on Ebay for about what I gave for it and it was a year old. I chose the Sport 4x4 this time because the ride was a little better and I hardly ever will go off road. I did opt and get one with the JBL stereo that is a must.

20+, but only on road trips. all bets are off in the city.

i just changed my spark plugs, and i am on my second tank. initial quick calc show it got worse. needing more data for sure.

I will say this: You are all full of sheet. My truck come with the window sticker when new, 16-19 miles per gallon. 2009 v6 4x4 sport, double cub long bed. Now, you guys run 17 or 18" rims, lifted 4-6" high and drive 40-50 miles/hr. and get 20-21 or even 22mpg? Get a life, and drive like the rest of us, any time, not only with the wind in the back. In other words, your trucks exceeds the manufacture' estimates? We are all mature people here.
    Take care
    vbibi:(

PS. I still have the window sticker in my glove box. Stop by and I'll show it to you.

I agree!! Tacoma trucks get shitty gas mileage! I don't understand it at all. As smart as the Japs are in designing these things how come they can't figure out how to get better mpg's? Add another gear or something. There's no excuse for a small truck getting the same mpg as a freaking full sized 4x4!

First thing people needs to understand that stock Taco with regular tires (not OFR) has their speedo wrong. So milage you calculate by looking at speedo or scanguage is wrong unless you installed bigger tires. There is 5 MPH difference when you run truck so when you think you are getting 18 MPG you probably making 20 mPG. You need to use GPS to get proper reading.
And yes it is possible to get better milage then factory estimate if you drive like you supposed to and not doing 100 MPH on the highway

who are you talking to? my truck is bone stock cept the camper shell, all season tires. i also still have my window sticker..from 2006. i also know how to fill up the tank completely full and reset the trip ODO, drive till i am needing more fuel, refill the tank completely full, note trip ODO miles, note gallons needed for full, and i know how to divide two numbers. 20mpg looks pretty obvious doing the math in my head. i dont putt around like a geezer. i drive the speed limit on road trips..in AZ the highway patrol is like on commision! they are everywhere. and where they are not, they park unmanned ford escapes with radar and cameras! they mail you a ticket! unbelievable. personally, i could give a rat's ass what everyone gets as fuel mileage. i just posted up my findings.

I just bought a used 2005 Tacoma Double Cab 4x4 V6 and though I've only had it for 2 weeks, my first fill up calculation netted me 20.2 mpg. It's mostly highway miles but anyone who has lived in the DC area knows that a commute on the capital beltway doesn't really count as highway driving.

The truck is bone stock and I drive pretty conservatively. I hope this average keeps up but I love the truck and the increased fuel costs over my last car (08 Sonata) is completely worth it.

I have a new 2010 4X4 Double cab. the first 2 tanks were 17.6 and 17.3. The truck is stock. I drive conservatively, some hills with mixed city/highway.

My truck came with 17" wheels which makes the speedo within 2mph at 55mph... and mine is off so that my mileage reads slightly WORSE than it really is.

I drive 70-75mph on the highway and 45-50 on suburban roads. Having said that, it's less about top speed than it is about acceleration and coasting to a stop. It's actually pretty easy to get ~20mpg avoiding stops when possible, losing at least 25% of your speed by coasting when you do need to stop and using cruise control on relatively flat ground. V6 is pretty unforgiving of constant speed fluctuations - even minor acceleration to gain back 3-4mph lost gives me 12-15mpg while doing it.
