There was a news blip last week about fuel pump accuracy. They're allowed to be slighlty off, so your fill ups may go higher or lower depending on the pump. In checking pumps they found that you're as likely to get more gas as than less gas. So it averages out, but can explain why you might get fluctuations in mileage when you thought your driving wasn't different.

Only my first fuel up, but 90% highway and cruise at 65 as often as possible.

But each time I do a fillup with the scangauge I reconcile the estimated consumption with what I pumped, in effect verifying that the fuel use is correct. I am typically within .2 gallon +/1 or around .2 mpg off if I got the typical 18mpg a V6 gets.

Further the scangauge allows you to adjust the odometer to reflect differences in tire size, etc to get an accurate odometer.

So yes, with a scangauge if you take a highway trip and average 24 that's fairly accurately what you got. An instant mpg of a lot higher than 30mpg happens all the time on just about any vehicle including yours all the time.

Sorta correct but it generally requires you to be in engine braking mode which will slow you down quick unless you are going down hill. It also doesn't occur below around 1500 rpm. Fairly easy to check with a stick, just let off the gas at 2000rpm and let yourself coast down, at some point you will feel the vehicle surge as the engine kicks back on, it's possible different gears switch at somewhat different rpm. With a slush box I don't know if it can be checked as obviously.

    It's called deceleration fuel cut-off.

Under many situations coasting in neutral is better, but dfco is always better if you are going to brake anyway, like down a hill or to an intersection, but I don't know as much about with a automatic, seems they either have to lock the torque converter to keep the engine spinning since the engine would stop without direct connection to the tranny below some sufficient rpm?, I suspect that would be higher than 1500 rpm.

Another fill up last night, 21.1 MPG.

I filled up because we were heading into the mountains to play a bit. I've already put 125 miles on the new tank and the needle is barely below 3/4. This is where I was on my first tank when I hit 22.5. 50 or so of that 125 was in 4H and climbing on gravel.

Is it possible there are V6's without OD out there? When I'm in OD I have to try to get the needle above 2250 RPM.

I cannot believe how many people by big trucks (and the Taco got a lot bigger in its history) and choose V6 engines.....and some with 4WD and even worry about a few MPG here and there. Quibbling over 4MPG. If 4 MPG makes all the difference between comfort and financial disaster the 4 CYL should be a boon to some's bank account and lifestyle.

I live in the Roaring Fork Valley in Colorado and make a lot of trips out to the west coast. The speed limit around here is 65 mph; you are always going uphill or down hill. The speed limit in the desert out west is 75 mph for most of the 900 miles I drive. I'm usually at 21 mpg. Sometimes a mile or two less depending on wind, speed and incline. If I'm at 80 mph or more, the mpg takes a nose dive. But the desert is long and sometimes you gotta burn some dinosaur bones.
I spoke with a guy who has a similar rig to mine. He put a Flowmaster muffler on and said he increased his mpg by 2-3. I plan on doing the same and putting on a cold air intake which should give me another couple of mpgs. Someone said on one of these blogs that the non-functional hood scoop was "gay". Pretty soon, I'll go from "gay" to "cool".

Based on a full year of fuel consumption (and my handy iPhone app), my average has been 19.5 miles per US gallon. Winter really drags this down - in the summer, the average is 22. My truck sees little city use, but I do live in very hilly terrain.

I find it hard to believe that a muffler and CAI can add 25-30% MPG. Is that really true?? I always hear people say "I talked to this guy who said this..." No one ever says, "here look at this fuelly report you can see in March when I added the muffler and CAI that my MPG increased 30%"

    25-30% are HUGE numbers.

I didn't think so. With all the pressure car manufacturers are under to increase MPG it would be extremely silly if $500.00 of aftermarket mods could increase your MPG by 30%. Sometimes you just need common sense..

Got my best tank a couple of weeks ago, 19.25 MPG. All highway driving around 65 MPH.
I'm happy with that, the sticker claims 19 max hwy.
    About 29K on the odometer.

I drive in stop-go traffic in Lexington Ky - an 8 mile trip to work in the morning takes about 30 minutes and the trip home takes about 30-45 minutes. I drove a mix of highway and in town the first tank on a new v6 4x4 DBL with Off Road Pkg tires and got 17.5 and I was thrilled. My Ford Escape FWD v6 got about 19 and the Sport Trac V8 before got only 13, so if I can get 15-16 sitting in traffic, I'll take it.

I had an I4 2005 Tacoma that I kept for a short time (with the 5sp stick) and I could get 23 on the hwy. I can't imagine a normal 20mpg with the V6 Taco.

Getting better than average gas mileage is about how you drive. Learn to accelerate not too fast, not too slow. Don't hammer it to pass people. When you can coast, do so. Learn the speeds that are most efficient for each gear. There are a ton of little things that add up to really make a difference.

I've never gotten less than 10%-20% higher than EPA specs on a vehicle I've owned...
