Last Fill @ 430 miles topped off at 19.674 gal
All I had to do was, look at the Ultragauge every two seconds and not touch the throttle with anything but a feather.
Pretty bad when the "Blue Hairs" behind you are honkin'
Thought I'd try takin' it easy and see how good I could get it.
Overall avg MPG is 18.29 for 21 Fill-Ups

I just got home from a long road trip from Kansas through Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas. I'm driving an '06 4.0 v6 4x4 Access cab, 6-speed and pulled 20.7 mpg with a heavy tailwind in eastern colorado. I have a K&N air filter and put 87 octane in the truck. I've never gotten that good of mileage on this vehicle, ever. Amazingly, my mileage continued to stay high, even with a full bed and driving 75+ through the mountains---sometimes as high as 19.7 mpg. It was like I couldn't do anything that would cause a drop in mileage.

My question is this: what is the cause for the increase in gas mileage at altitude? Is it related to the engine alone, or is it just because the air is less resistant at highway speeds, and therefore requires less gas to push the vehicle along?

This truck was doing mileage I never believed possible and I'm convinced there has to be some way to get that kind of performance at lower altitudes through some kind of adjustments. Recalibrate the oxygen sensor? Higher octane gas? What?

Your truck is a 2009. You're going to replace the factory cold air intake with an aftermarket cold air intake?

I got about 21.8 in my stock 4x4 DCSB 4.0 on the highway. That was before upgrading the tires and 3" lift. Kept the RPM's right around 2 and right around 72 mph.

21 mpg... all highway, all 65, the whole tank on the way to Vegas.

Double cab 4x4 TRD Offroad V6 auto... thats got to be the worst set up for mileage.

Once I stepped it up to 80-100 it dropped to 16.

I bought my truck a few months ago and was worried about the mileage as it was rated as 14/18 with the 6-speed. That said I really wanted a Taco so I of course went for it.

The first three or so tanks while I was getting the hang of how to drive for efficiency I averaged about 17 MPG. I still do get into the gas fairly hard sometimes though. After that period I have been averaging 19-22 MPG with about 30% city and 70% highway and the majority of the highway driving has been in the mountains of Colorado.

The only modifications from stock that I have made is the addition of a leer XR cap.

All that considered I have been very pleased with the mileage I have achieved with my Tacoma.

on a recent roadtrip i found that with the AC off and having the back sliding window open and the driver and pasenger window cracked 3 inches at 65mph gave me about 2mpg's better. my ultra gauge was reading about 18mpg with the AC on low and windows up. 20mpg with the setup i just explained. I also have window visor if that makes any difference.

Still doesn't compare to some these mpg's

my calculations get around 18.4 mpg but thats not with the lift and 33" tires added in. . so i think its more like 19-20.5 ... with a 4x4 even.. not to shabby

My last tank was 21.5 mpg (US gallons). Average over the last 20 tanks has been just under 21 (I track it with an iPhone app). It's worse in the winter, and also worse if I use gas with ethanol in it (don't want to debate this, just reporting what the numbers tell me, which is that I lose about 1 mpg). FYI, it's a double cab long bed with AT, a tonneau, TRD cat back, and I run premium fuel in it. Almost no city driving, but it's extremely hilly where I use the truck.

Just adding to the database ;)

In the mountains of Colorado where the speed limits are 65 on most highways I average 21-22 if I take it easy and don't speed with my 4X4 4.0 OR with the 6-speed. Its been a warm summer so I usually have the AC on for at least half of my driving day but I haven't played with it to see if I get much of a change. In the city it drops to about 19 on surface streets. For having an EPA rating of 14/18 I have been very pleased with these numbers.
