Finally! on an one way trip of 80 miles under this circumstances I did 21.7 MPG and I had a peak of 22.3 MPG:
    7 passengers (4 adults, 3 kids). (700 lbs)
Cap's basket full: around 80 lbs.
Hitch's basket full: around 150 lbs.
    and Taco's bed 80%: around 300 lbs.

No second filter mod, all is stock.

On my way back I had a peak of 25.5 MPG and the whole distance (80 miles), end on 22.2 MPG.

Speed it your best allied, I drove at around 68-73 MPH both ways. My last report was 13.8 MPG on a 75-80 MPH on a round trip o f 300miles, truly bad.

Scangauge II, helped alot on producing this exact info.

Now that would be interesting to see, specially since I got a DC and a tonneau. If you find the link, share.

    05 db cab v6 prerunner

KN 77 , mobile one syn oil, electric fan, 265/75/16's BFG all terrain with 41# air in them, outside air temp 70, no ac on, simi rolling hills in KY( same as last week tailgate down 19mpg) Tail gate Up and 300# of extra load.......................so damn close I am calling it 20.......................mpg lol

I think this still sucks......I wanted 24 so bad I could steal it.....

I will take the KN off on day and test it against the stocker....

I can't put any more air in the tires or I will bounce of the dang road....

What can I do to get more Mileage....... Full headers/exhaust/pipe? Pull the heads and do something in there?

And it is not the driving either....I guess if others are getting 20 or so in Preruner I am good. But if they are getting mid twenties then I am pissed .......

I did a quick search and found it again. It's supposed to be a study of the benifits of keeping the tailgate up instead of down. Reading it over again they only show results from one of the fords with a tonneau but the numbers on it are very interesting Here's an eye opening quote.
I was also surprized at the drag number results at different yaw angles (as in cross winds)

With no more fanfare here it is - Pickup Truck Aerodynamics

Okay, most of the time I suppress my nerdness, but I'm a design engineer and about 10 years ago back at university we did a wind tunnel test on various truck drag situations. We didn't have a full size wind tunnel with full size trucks but used a scale die cast as our subject. We had a cap, tonneau and tail gate up and down. I don't have the data to list but the Tonneau cover was the lowest drag coefficient. In order from lowest drag to highest:
    Tonneau cover
    Tail gate up
Tail gate down and cap were about the same.
So our findings are much in line with the report above.

If someone wants to design the "best" situation, it would be a cross between a cap and a tonneau cover blending in with the back of the cab down to the tailgate reducing any turbulence.

Great pic. That goes along with my education. The most aerodynamic shape is a raindrop. You want rounded in the front and pointed at the back. However, the standing vortex that can happen without tonneau and tailgate up is a bit counterintuitive.

I wonder if anyone has tested with bug deflectors. I didn't buy mine thinking of aerodynamics, but now I'm starting to wonder if it helps or hinders.

Oh, and thanks for looking that up, Roland.

Nice. A Tacoma on 'roids. :p

My favorite, though, is pictures 11a, 11b, and 11c. Most notibly 11c where the tailgate is "off".

If I was to conduct a report like this, I would at least make sure that the pictures matched what I was saying.

I did my first fill up on the new truck 08 dc 4x4 and I got 18 mpg. Def better than what I was getting in the X-Runner (15-16mpg) :)

Hell yeah man! I think the magnaflow exhaust on the X-Runner was killing my mpg. (or should I say my right foot with the exhaust was killing it) :burnrubber:

What size tires do you run? Are they stock and are the the smaller size or the bigger size ones that are still stock.

He has a double cab long bed, so it wouldn't be the 265 70/16 off-road tires, and it is not a TRD sport, so he wouldn't have the 17's either.

IF rich is still running stock wheels and tires, then he'd be running the 245 75/16 dunlops, though off-hand I can't remember if he has upgraded his tires or not.

That is the tire that I was running 245/70/............I was getting better gas mileage then also,
1 due to the smaller tire size, less weight to spin.

    2. the speed o meter on the tacomas are set correctly for the larger 265/70's..........So that means the smaller tires gas mileage if calculated using the mileage is incorrect and will show you get better gas mileage due to the speedometer is not actual.....And your warranty will be up sooner!

I thought I was going to get 23 or so.....lol dang my luck...I am getting 17-20 now.....

I am getting 17-18.5 consistently around town. The only long trip I have taken was from Phoenix to Show Low which is a climb from 1200ft to 6500 at 200mi. I got 20.5 on the way up and 21.5 down with average speed 70mph. I am getting the mileage that I had planned on when I bought it. 4.0L TRD offroad 4x4 access cab.
