    Agreed as well.

    Stock 4.0 6-speed Access cab..
    I got 21mpg when I was stock
fell to 20mpg when I went up a tire size (245/70 to 265/75)
fell to 19 when I got sliders and lifted 2"
fell to 17.5  when the cold weather hit.

What I do to IMPROVE it...
    - Drive with a scangauge/Torque app/etc. Anything that lets you see real-time MPG. With Torque, I went from 17.5mpg to 18.5 (this past tank) just by knowing exactly which gear and what RPM I could get the best MPGs.
    - Don't drive above 65mph, and always be super super delicate on the accelerator. Again, using Torque, I can see a 1/64" depress on the gas can drop me from a cruising-MPG of 30, down to 18 or 20mpg.
    - Keep tires near or at max PSI. My max is 44, I keep mine at 40-42PSI. Makes a 2-3mpg difference with my 265/75 Hankooks.
    - Don't take off (like lightning) from every green light. Autos, go gentle on acceleration; Standards, shift at about 2k RPM, and don't power-band it. With Torque, I see I can get as bad as 5mpg in 1st, 8mpg in 2nd, 10mpg in 3rd, 14mpg in 4th, 16mpg in 5th, and 16-17mpg in 6th if I'm staying in the power-band at every green light.
    - Off-road I'm usually in 1st the whole time, and get about 2-8mpg the entire trail. Sucks

I'll live with slightly worse gas mileage. I can't drive like that....i'm too impatient. ;-)

And yet the auto consistently gets better MPG than stick...whooda thunkit? I'm guessing throttling subtleties have a huge effect

Actually that statement was wrong. 6th gear is almost an exact split between gears 4 and 5 on the automatic. 4th (AT) and 5th (MT) are both 1:1, and .70:1 5th (AT) is quite a bit taller than .85:1 6th (MT). Both have the same rear end. That's why 2000 rpm is 67 mph on the AT and 55 mph on the MT.

That's why the auto kicks the mileage pants off the stick. That, and it'll go into that tall 5th at 42 mph whereas so many people with the 6 speed won't go into overdrive until over 50 mph because they're afraid of hurting the engine. I say barf on that, if I'm doing 35 mph and not accelerating I'm in OD.

The engine isn't that inefficient when goosing it. It's far worse to spin it and keep acceleration load down around 60% while falsely thinking you're saving gas.

For what it's worth, I goose my truck... a LOT...

I bought a tonneau about a year and a half ago for my truck mostly so I could carry stuff in my bed. I've noticed that if I do a lot of city driving I get worse gas mileage than I have in the past. From about 18 mpg to 16-17. If I do a lot of highway driving I've gotten a bit better mileage, 22-23 a few times. The extra weight probably makes the street driving mileage worse and the wind advantage on the highway makes the mpg better. A friend of mine with a long work commute got worse gas mileage when he removed his tonneau for a while also. I saw that Myth Busters episode, but I'm talking from my own experiences.

I get an overall average of 18.7 i drive around 11 highway miles and 6 city everyday each way for work and i run around 65 on highway and i also like to get into it 3k for normal accerlation and i love to get to 5k in the city often. I have a 2011 4.0 TRD Sport acc cab 4x4 auto with the stock tires and a AFE Stage 2 CAI I run 92/93 octane not sure how much that affects it.

    I'm getting 18.9 with a stock truck.

If I don't buy a scan gauge, cold air intake, exhaust, fuel treatments, premium fuel, special tires, etc. to try to "improve my fuel mileage"... I average 30+ MPG over 12,000 miles.

I just hit 20.2 average on this tank @ 380 miles I drove under 65 on the freeway for about 190miles and the rest was driving around town 40-55... it averaged between 37-65 degrees. And i got a dlcb 4x4 or.

If you want to feel like you go further on a tank of gas..... once the fuel pump clicks when your filling up. put in another 2 gallons because thats how much can fit... it really doesnt make a difference in the world of fuel mileage.... but it might make you feel a bit better deep down under.

Drove around SC over the Christmas timeframe. Didn't calculate mpg on the way up (5 hour drive) but when I drove down to the southern parts of SC (~3.5 hour drive) I got a good 22 mpg. That was going an average of 65-70 in the pouring rain, rarely passing anyone, and going over constant moderate hills.

On driving back home to GA, heading back from the Savannah direction I managed to get a constant 15-16 mpg, because I was going a constant 80 mph in a headwind (on flatland).

Driving in SC was 20% city and 80% hwy.

Driving around this past week doing about 50% city and 50% hwy, I went back up to 20 mpg.

All in all I am quite happy with my current gas mileage for it to be winter time. And for reference I am 100% stock.
