Workman experimented with MPG's recently on some road trips he has been on.

Using non ethanol fuel 91 oct, going 65mph on the interstate for 450miles, no headwind, lots of hills/mtn passes....Workman netted 22.89MPG

Using Ethanol fuel 91 oct, going 65mph same terrain, no headwind, 450 miles, Workman netted 19.07MPG

Using Non Ethanol fuel, speed at 75mph, same terrain 19.87MPG

Using Ethanol Fuel, speed at 75mph, 16.65MPG

Workman can clearly see that going 75MPH cuts the MPG by 3, and using ethanol based fuel just plain sucks, and sucks down gas.

Best Workman has seen MPG wise is 24 using non ethanol fuel....Toyota claims 21MPH for HIGHWAY, not INTERSTATE:cool: 21 is pretty accurate going typical Highway speeds 55/65. Going 75 on Interstate sucks down the gas.

I get on average 22 mpg on highway if I stay at or under 65 mph.

Good info! Thanks for the post. I can't believe the percentages of ethanol making it into fuel lately.

I have an 06 double cab short bed 4x4 auto. My commuting is country roads +/-50 MPH and I consistantly get 20-21mpg in the summer, drops to around 19 in the winter with the crappy gas and letting the truck warm up exc.. Normal highway speeds drops it to around 19-20 in the summer.

Never got less than 21. Been getting 23 recently. (The last 3 times I checked it.) Drive 26 miles one way to work about 20of it rural the rest city driving. I drive a 4.0 V6 Double Cab 4X4. The secret is to keep the RPMs @2000 or less. This works with any vehicle. I know to a lot of you this seems like grandma driving, but if you really are concerned about mileage don't complain about it when you keep it floored.

After doing the MAF & TB cleaning i took a drive on a good straight road. Reset my UltraGauge and it was giving me 19.0 average MPG but around town its still kinda low, thats alot better than the 13.8 I was getting. Plugs , Wires and tire pressure are next in line

I have the same rig, tried this approach once before and all I can ever reach is the 16-17 range. But I'll give it another try...I just don't see it happening. I have a BAK-flip FiberMax too now, also running premium fuels, synthetic lubes, and properly filled tires. Lemme ask...on the highway, in order to keep it under 2000rpm are you doing no more than 55mph?

There is a short Interstate stretch where I will go as high as 65. The rest varies between 45-55. Yes, I am one of those who obey the speed limit. I took a trip to the Gulf in the summer and I let my wife drive over half of it. She exceeded 80 some of the time and the gas mileage really suffered. I think jack rabbit starts and plowing into curves and general non-smooth driving is the real culprit for poor gas mileage.

+1, Sounds like my wife! I get on her about it every time I ride with her. I've yet to let her drive my truck however.

Lately? I guess some of you are just spoiled, the northeast has had ethanol fuel for as long as I can remember.

I believe the comment was referring to the amount of ethanol currently making its way into our fuels. Texas has been 'offering' E10 at their pumps for more than a decade, probably closer to 15 years. I'm sure we'll see higher blends eventually, considering other parts of the world use higher blends...and if we want to keep a good standing in "one world" I'm sure we'll conform to the green world standards :ballchain:

In Texas, the majority of our State Highways have posted limits of 70 MPH. Most stretches of Interstate Highway have speed limits of at least 70 MPH until recently, there are areas that have limits of 75. So, most 'law-abiding' citizens out here go well over 45-55 legally :burnrubber:

Around town in my 08' X-Runner, with A/C (S.florida here) I get around 16-17 mpg mixed driving but mostly local.
In the winter though with no A/C I manage around 19 mpg. My last tank of fuel netted just over 19 mpg with mixed driving and some A/C usage but not a lot. I was pleased with this number. I drive mostly conservatively, short shifting and trying to keep the truck going without exceeding 2Krpm's.

In Alabama, areas of the Interstate within city limits the speed limit is 65. Rural areas it is 70. I use the city limit section on my commute everyday. The majority of my commute is on 2 lane rural roads. The speed limit on the roads I use is between 45-55. The RPMs do not exceed 2000 even at 65mph. It is stock with no mods. I could probably get better mileage than I am getting if it were Interstate all the way.

I took my first trip with my new tacoma this last week. I drove at 80 MPH nearly the whole trip and averaged 15.1 mpg. I was very disappointed to say the least. My truck is brand new and I was wondering if the bad mpgs is from not being broke in yet?

Well driving at 80 MPH definitely didn't help. Usually, anything over 70 is going to start a pretty bad decrease in MPG over distance/time.

Mine's still fairly new, up to about 6k miles, but i've not seen any improvement. My worst tank was a road trip to Dallas, took the new 85mph toll road.....got 13.6mpg on that tank! These trucks are definitely not highway cruisers. I've been around 17mpg since day 1.

I haven't seen more than 17 mpg either. At 23k miles now. Even with a 1500 mile trip to Cali and back to Washington, doing the speed limit. I don't believe for a minute that 20mpg is possible unless the automatic is that much more efficient.
