Some people are getting it, not quite sure how. Maybe on a stock, non-4wd with strictly road tires. I saw just over 18mpg on one tank, best by far.

The bad mileage was from going 80mph. These trucks DO NOT do well over 65mph due to gearing. If you must go 80mph, stick with a highway tire (less weight than their A/T versions), and keep them filled within 4PSI of their max. It won't work magic, but it'll help. Usually about 1-2mpg.

On a trip down to South Padre Island here in Texas, I convoyed with 15-20 other trucks. Everyone was on a tight timeline, so we were going 85-90mph the majority of the time. My scangauge-equivalent was reading real-time of 10-14mpg. I usually go 55-60mph, and get a real-time reading of 22-30mpg!

The stick is not geared for 80+. Speed will kill you.

Of course Toyota didn't have to make that terrible decision, they prefer to make more money selling the automatic.

Shoot, the stick isn't even geared for 65+! Whatever engineer decided to pick that LOUSY overdrive ratio should have been FIRED.

80 mph is spinning 241 cubic inches at 2900 rpm, and then compound with lousy aero... Imagine fuel flow as a toilet flushing.

20 mpg is very possible on the 4.0L 6spd. This winter is probably going to knock a tank under again soon, but if I can hold 3 more weeks I will have driven an entire year without ever averaging less than that. Yes, my truck is 4WD.

It's just like getting 70+mpg in a prius, or 50+ in a civic, or 30+ in a worthywads Tacoma. Keep on top of your maintenance, drive smart, keep your butt off the highway and down to the speed limit, maybe spend a few bucks on synthetic fluids and low rolling resistance tires, and if you really want it you can achieve it. If you don't, that's ok too, it's your truck and you should drive it how you want to.

Averaging 18.7 with my 13' DCLB. Not bad I usually drive around 65-70 and most of my driving is back and forth between speed zone and through villages and what not... I bet I'd be getting close to 20 on a trip np...

I should mention I'm all stock as of now with the 16" steelies and Dunlops.

I wish I could get close to a dependable 20 MPH. My foot isn't that heavy, either. Hoping it will improve with age/milage. 7200 mi right now.

I am currently at 18.8 mpg for '12 DCLB V6 Prerunner (less than 3000 miles). 30/70 city/hiway driving but on the hiway I always cruise between 66-74 mph (speed limit is 65-75 mph), the tach is between 2000-2300 rpm. I hope that I can break 20 mpg when it is warmer.

I'm averaging just a shade under 20 MPGs (19.6 over my last six fuel-ups according to Fuelly) with my '11 DCSB V6 4x4. Rarely, if ever, do I take it above 70 mph on the highway (I'm generally a light-footed driver). Weekly commute is roughly 50-50 city/highway.

Truck is completely stock for now.

    FOR BEST MPG:
    I-4 motor
    2WD
    lowest weight, so std cab.

But I drive a 2012 4X4 Access Cab with added heavy skid plates, plate front bumper with 8000 lb winch, and I drive as slow as I can stand. My compromise is a 32mpg car for back and forth to work, and I drive the truck when I NEED A TRUCK.

I get right at 20 combined driving, and about 24 hiway.
I drive really conservatively, and 67 or so is my highway speed.

Just curious how all of you are calculating your mpg's. I mainly rely on my scanguage but every now and then use old fashion math and divide miles driven by gallons filled. I plan on selling the scanguage and using the Torque android app and seeing if that is accurate or not.

I owned a 4.0 12 6speed 4x4. After 6 months of 15-16mpg i had enough. I traded mine in for an auto 4.0 12 4x4 , now im seeing 18.5-20 on average. But thats going 55-65 on the interstate. 2k rpm is the key and easy on the throttle on take offs.

Its BS that the manual gets less MPG than the Auto

I have a '12 DCSB Sport and only getting 15-16MPG with mixed city/highway driving. It's mainly the tires though, went a little bigger with 265/70 and they're rugged trails. Oh well! If I wanted crazy fuel economy I would've bought a Prius.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
4.0L V6 here with a 4x4 dual cab short bed. I get between 15.5 and 16.5mpg consistently between fillups. I try not to drive THAT hard, but it's 90% street mileage not high way where I go.

I did a turn around to Escondido (San Diego from North Orange County) area and got above 20 for sure. Loaded up some stuff and got like 14 on the return trip. Messed up the wind profile with all the stuff in the bed. Average once I filled up (plus a small traffic patch in there) was like 16.5 over the entire trip. Not awful for me actually.

I've got just barely over 1k on my 13 Dbl cab SB Auto 4.0 w/TRD OR pkg and yesterday I did my first real test on mpg. Started with a completely full tank, went little over 200miles, started at 600ft above sea level and arrived at just over 2000ft elevation. Drove with my cruise on nearly the whole way never exceeding 70mph. Road conditions were wet the whole trip and air temp ranged from 28-34 degree F. Filled up at my usually gas station near my house and hand calculated the mpg. I got 18.4 MPG

Only time will tell but I believe 20-20+ mpg is achievable in summer months driving at a sustained speed the never goes over 2000RPM.

It's hard to tell exactly but with my 100% stock 2013 Tacoma TRD OR I'm turning right around 2100ish RPM at 70mph.

I use Torque for real-time feedback, and then old-fashion calculate my tank at every fill-up.

For the price, you can't beat Torque. My husband uses the $5 version, I use the free one. The free one isn't as accurate, but I use it for the general idea (try to reach "30mpg" while driving, instead of "19mpg", for example). My husband's is pretty spot-on during real-time, however. His "total tank" is a little off, about 2-3mpg, so he calculates by hand at every fill-up too.

Bring it down to 62-65mph. Also, if you have a fairly steady foot, you will be better than cruise control, as they usually open it up pretty wide on inclines, whereas you can back off and drop down to 55-60mph if it means saving 2-5mpg.

In all honesty, this is likely the only time I'll ever actually calculate the MPG. I'm usually more concerned with getting from point "A" to point "B" in the, within reason, least amount of time. I only checked it because I was curious what these Tacoma's will get for MPG if the person behind the wheel, within reason, does their part. If I was truly concerned about MPG, I never would have purchased a Tacoma.
