I have cap, and with my AFE Pro Dry drop in filter I get 20-21mpg. I didn't get more than 17-18 with or without the cap until the AFE.

Filled up last night. 18.5 gallons of 87 regular with 350 miles on the tripometer put me at 18.9 mpg. 160 miles was city and 190 miles was highway driving of 75 mph.

4.0 V6 auto, Roll-N-Lock bed cover, secondary filter removed, AFE drop it filter, tire pressure at 30 PSI cold.

I'm sure that if I used Premium gas vs. the regular gas it would put me at the 20 mpg from what I've read here on this site but my truck runs fine on reg. and I'd rather spend less at the pump. Besides, my last truck was a 93' Jeep Wrangler 4.0 auto and I would consistently get only 240 to 250 miles on a 20 gallon tank. 14 to 16 mpg.

And even if it doesn't help your mpg, it'll save you money on air filters since you can just wash and reuse it. No more buying disposable filters or cleaning oil for ones like K&N.

None currently, but I would like a better sounding exhaust and perhaps a cold air pack and some color coded step bars
I am curious about using something close to premium fuel to get better mileage. I might give that a try in the spring and see if theres a difference.

In the spring I had the air filter changed and had expected I might get a little better mileage but nothing seems to change the mileage in my truck. I am a good steady driver, who doesn't drive 80mph all the time nor do I bounce the tach needle rarely over 3500.
I had some thoughts of dropping it off at my local dealer and have them check it out but I figured they might "monkey" with it and make it worse. At best, my mileage averages about 19.... I would like to put a cold air intake on but at the cost, versus the payback it just doesn't seem worth it for a max of 2 mpg..... any thoughts

Well, I'm still trying to get a good cacluation - my first tank (from dealer) caculated to appx. 22.5 dividing total miles driven by gallons - that was filling it only to the first pump cutoff per the ScanGauge instructions when trying to calibrate it. Scanguage was reading about 22.1 avg. I am on my second tank and scan guage is reading a fairly consistent 22.5 now, mostly driving up and down hills on a backroad, around 35-50 mph.

Hopefully this is somewhat accurate, but only time will tell. I can tell you, that if I can get 22 mpg on the backroad driving that I do most of the time I will be a happy camper. :)

ScanGauge is a device that plugs into the On Board Diagnostic port on your vehicle and will give you readouts of all kinds of information, and can calculate MPG pretty darn accurately. I got mine here about 10 days ago - this is a group buy special for Toyota Owners. Mine only took about 2 days to be delivered (via Priority Mail). They are in AZ, I live in VA so it was fast. I love mine so far - best money I ever spent.

For 2 solid years I never got above 18mpg with mine. Finally got 20.3 one day with a 100 mile trip out and back to fix an ex's computer. So I knew it could be done.... lol Then I got the AFE and hit 20 consistently. And that was with 285/75 16 tires. I have 265/75 16's on now I think, and they're 5-6lbs lighter than the 285's. Haven't had time to see if that has done anything. lol I've been driving the car just to save money on gas. :D

21.5 on first two tanks. Mostly rural highway driving averaging 50mph.

For the AFE filter, haven't found one listed for an 09, will one that's for an 08 work? I'm thinking its the same.

    thanks,

Lots of factors. If you have very little traffic, no 10% ethanol in fuel, drive smart, have your truck well maintained and broken in, it can be done. I avg'd 20-20.5 mpg Memorial Day wkd to late Sept. Mostly stock, just syn oils and exhaust.

With colder weather & winter gas 20 mpg is a summer time memory, except trips. At high 18's now, on the slide to 17 by January.

welp. only 10% here is So cal, so that's a bust. I drive easy, only gun it when necessary usually to get away from the not so smart drivers.

Engine needs more breaking in. only 2,700 miles. It is very well maintained..... cmon 20....... I have the same truck as your 05 , just an 08 though...
