Anyone gone from Tacoma -> GX 460?

I figured the V8 would get the same if not worse fuel mileage than the Tacoma. My wife does drive an electric so it doesnt hurt to fill up the taco since its only one vehicle needing gas

 

When I drive my wife's GX I can regularly get 17-18mpg on highway. My Taco is lucky to get 15-16mpg. The wife's GX is stock, while my Taco has sliders, and a roof rack so that may be effecting mpg.

 

I believe @ClassyTacos has both machines. Not sure if he has a vid up on towing with the 460. Check out duder's channel on YT.

 

3rd row seating in GX 460 is useless

Maybe in an emergency for kids......

The cargo area is much more useful than 3rd row

I have both. Well a 470. 20 year old 470 is still the truck I take on road trips. It’s built so much nicer, so much quieter, and gets similar fuel mileage even on heavy 33’s. Stereo is better, it’s not constantly hunting gears on the highway, and has more fancy stuff than my loaded 23 taco.

I haven't been in a gx but I think the hatch door and sliding glass in the 4runner are superior

Yeah it would be nice to at least have a sliding window. After owning one over a decade, it is by far my favorite car I’ve ever owned. It has been dead nuts reliable, taken me all over the country off roading, and never missed a beat.
I don’t even think about the tailgate or window anymore.

 

How much worse could the MPG really be in the GX from the Taco?

I'm already sitting at a good like 13-14 just from putting 33s on the Taco. I don't have any other extra weight except for my rock sliders.

You're telling me the GX would get like 10-12MPG?

 

damn, what wheels/tires are you running and why is it so low in MPG? I am sitting 100% stock and could get 22-23mpg on the highway even in the PA mountains.
Fully loaded with 5 people and gears, same trip getting 20mpgs.

 

Honestly, I am not even sure. Maybe there is another underlying issue that I am not aware of, aside from a heavy foot. Also I live in the midwest so i'm not constantly fighting elevation (although this truck still hunts on the interstate from the mildest incline).

I'm still on stock gears with an OTT tune so I know that's not really helping my cause, but I don't have roof racks, bed racks, tents or anything extra like the overlanding bros do.

 

I am thinking the OTT tune maybe part of the cause but not 100%, typically I think the tune for tacoma makes it like to keep the rev higher than stock gearing so its more responsive and maybe that could hurt the MPG a bit? just my thoughts.

 

About to trade my wife’s RXh for a left over 2023, managed $7k off MSRP and 2.49% only hesitate cause the mpg and the RX is paid for. You all like these as family haulers? The TX is $$$$ and plastic, would like to pay the GX off and have a solid family hauler. Wife commutes 78 miles round trip though to work 4 days a week.

 

The old 4.6L in the GX lacks direct injection and simulated atkinson cycle, the two fuel-saving technologies in our 2GR. The stock GX weighs as much as a fully-armored Taco with steel bumpers and skid plates, so that hurts mpg in rush hour driving.

Are you correcting your fuel mileage calculations to account for the tire size increase? 13-14 mpg displayed would be 14-15 mpg actual.

 

I was attempting to sell my taco to buy a GX a few months back. Found a babied 2017 with low miles and test drove it multiple times.

Still to my disbelief..my 2014 DCSB 4x4 in near mint condition w/58k miles got NO attention on the market.

I made some comfort changes to the taco and convinced myself to keep it..but I sometimes still think about what coulda been with a sweet and smooth GX.

Long story short…do it! Way more comfortable than a Tacoma.

 

I looked at GX’s before buying the Tacoma. I convinced myself I didn’t want to spend the money on a lift, etc. and went with the Taco. Now I’m spending the money on a lift, etc. I wish I’d have bought the GX.
