I think the oil should be similar in viscosity in the front and rear applications? The rear diff gets most work. It does have a much larger volume however: 3.1 qts rear vs 1.6 front

Just to be safe and avoid any confusion, I'll be stopping by my local stealership and picking up the fluids.

Toyota transfer case gear oil LF is $70 per quart. My Toyota parts guy said use 75-90.

Holy Shit. Yeah screw that. Getting just standard 75-90. Is there a brand you picked up? Does it need to be GL-5 or GL-4? Thanks Split.

    I hope so.
    This stuff says
    Differential-GL-4, GL-5
    Non-synchronized transmission-GL-5
Same stuffs going in the diffs.

I'm going to do a drain and refill on trans, diffs, and t.case at 5K anyway. Probably do Redline or something...

I actually just called the dealership and told them I would like them to check them and make sure they are full. Got an appointment tomorrow. Considering this is super simple for them to check I figured why not.

you could actually do it yourself in less time than it would for the whole dealership/appointment.

Yeah, but I am lazy and honestly don't want to buy the fluids to top it off. Figured its good to have them check it while I have the day off anyways.

I went to the dealer for the 5k service. I mentioned to the service manager that the manual said to "check all fluid levels." I asked him if they checked all of the gear oils during a 5k service. He said "no." I asked him if they could check them for me, as I had heard reports of Tacomas coming under-serviced from the factory. He said he had been working there for many years and he had never seen that. How would he know if they don't look? I guess "check ALL fluid levels" means all fluid levels with a convenient cap. This causes me not to have that warm fuzzy feeling when I walk into the dealer. They did check the gear oils and they were okay...or so they say.

My rear diff was 95% full. Front was 30% low. I think there are more concerns with front diff from what I read. Could be wrong. All need to be checked. There is a fundamental issue here that there is no independent check going on. People make mistakes so there needs to be a peer check in process. Could happen during PDI at dealer. Appears to me erosion of trust has occurred. Seems to be luck if all fluids are full.

Did you have to drop the skid plate to check the front diff?
