The rear end in my 08 Prerunner TRD has been whining for a while. Not it sounds more serious. I am kind of upset because I had my mechanic look at it and he replaced the left rear axle bearing. The noise is still there and loud as ever so he said the other one needs replacing too.

I had my wife drive me around the neighborhood while I sat in the bed today and to me it sounds like the noise is coming from the rear diff. Looks like there are some bearings in there too. Am I correct? Anyone else ever went through this?

Lots of bearings in there. 2 Pinion bearings, a carrier bearing on each side of the 3rd member where the axles go in, and of course the rear wheel bearings. I've blown up plenty of differentials on older Toyota trucks due to downright abuse when I was younger but I've never had to touch the diff on a 2nd gen besides changing the fluid every 35-40k miles or so.

The whining you describe is most likely the pinion bearing , does it get loud when letting off the gas/coasting down hill ??

But yeah I paid just under $200 for a complete bearing kit...

EDIT: Unless you know diffs/gearing & have the tools to do it let a qualified shop do the rebuild

At real low speeds it has what I can best describe as a lower rumbling growl sound. Freeway speeds it is higher pitch and when you let off it DEFINITELY changes pitch. I'm bummed my guy changed an axle bearing at $440 and still has the issue.

4WD...I could never do this myself. I would certainly take it to a shop. I wonder how much it will set me back?

Def. pinion is going out, bet theres no preload left in it either...

& you got fucked on the axle bearing & the so called mechanic is either a liar or stupid (your choice) & you can tell him I said it...He should've checked the pinion for excess play, simple to do & takes about 30 sec. to check

Yeah bummer. I was really shocked by how bad it sounds today while riding in the back of the truck in the bed. That sucker is whining!!! Also sucks too cause I don't abuse mine at all and take great care of the truck. This will be the first somewhat serious.issue I have ever had with any of my 3 Tacomas.

Even if not a mech. without a grip of tools you can pull the 3rd member (the guts of differential) pretty easy, so $200 for bearing kit/another $200+ for a competent bench job you can get it done for less than that thieving asshole did for 1 axle bearing

Another thing is to quit driving it before you need a ring and pinion too. I'm rebuilding the diff in my BMW right now and it's certainly not a job for a novice.

    First thing first.
Have you check Differential oil level ? When was last changed?

Secondly your cheapest option is to pull third member from junk yard and have it swapped. Good rebuild is going to cost you and if they open and find out your gear is already crap you you will have to pay for another third anyway.

Weathertech floor liners moded to hold OEM floor mats, weathertech vent visors, Toyota bed mat, LEER 100XL cap, hood gasket mod to stop whistling.
I have a '14 DCLB Sport that has a howling rear end. When I get between 50-60 and let off the gas is when it does it. I'm only at 3500 miles, I'm waiting to get things a little more broken in before getting it fixed. There is a TSB out for trucks that howl like mine.

I've never seen nor heard anything about a diff TSB but what some of you describe it can't be anything else but the pinion bearing. (howling on de celeration) & it's subjective it may make noise & last the lifetime of ownership or it could grenade tomorrow, I drove mine w/howling for over a year but when it got to a point where I could physically rotate the pinion almost 3/4" out of the housing figured it was time to fix...

Bummer. Sorry to hear. Any details you mind sharing? Did you have noises before or just a sudden blowout? What year/mileage?

    Guys-

So I took the truck to a reputable mechanic near my home. The entire rear diff is shot. I could use some help on the quick.

A complete replacement of the entire diff is going to be:

Option A 3 year nationwide parts and labor warranty $2800
Option B: 1 Year nationwide parts and labor $2300.

    Does this seem crazy high?

Wow, That is crazy. almost $3 grand for new Diff ?
Go to Junkyard pull another one. fill with oil, continue driving.

EDIT: If it is whinning than its not completely gone, swap gears and bearings and be done with it.

It seems no one I am talking to is tooled for a rebuild. I may be completely wrong, but everyone wants to do a direct swap for all new stuff as opposed to a rebuild. I am parking it for a while until I feel I have found the right option.

East coast gear supply has complete 3rd members assembled for around $675. if you follow the instructions on this site it should be a relatively easy swap.
