    Go and look in person.

When I shopped TVs this past summer, the LG models looked oversaturated to me compared to others - yes, they had a price advantage but I could see a good reason for it - the picture just wasn't as crisp as the Samsung I ended up going with.

It's very important to stand in front of the sets and twiddle the controls yourself. Often, a store demo may look wrong because the settings are off from a bajillion customers messing with it. But, if you can't get the set to look correct even after adjusting it yourself, be wary. No matter what I did, I couldn't get those LGs to behave.

In terms of specs, the ones that matter most are size, resolution, contrast ratio, and refresh.

For LCDs, refresh rate is important. 120Hz makes a noticeable difference from 60Hz, but 240Hz doesn't do a thing as far as my eyes can tell. I also don't like some of the LCD-specific features (like Samsung's TruMotion) that give the "soap opera effect" where all the motion is too smooth and looks odd.

For plasma, make sure you at least have a 600Hz sub-field rate. The newer models with this higher rate are definitely a step up from 480Hz units.

That said, I'm very happy with my LG Blu-Ray/Surround system, so I'm certainly not saying they're a bad company.

Take your time with this one and do your research. You're talkin' about spending a good chunk of change...worth getting it right.

went to best buy today and looked at some of the tvs... i was there for a good 3 hrs looking, playing around with the tvs.... so far i found a few that i really liked. a 46" lcd 1080p 60hz samsung on sale for $880. picture is great. and i also found a 50" panasonic plasma 1080 600hz for 900!!!!!! it had a really good picture but the one thing that i cant stand is the glare on the screen. thats the one thing that could keep me from buying it as i dont always like sitting in the dark and i def. cont stand the glare coming off the tv.
    Samsung
    Panasonic

while i was there i was checking out some of their sound systems. i have to say, i was impressed with this samsung 5.1 system. its $600 and sounded pretty good. there was also a panasonic system 7.1 for $500.

    samsung
    Panasonic

i didnt think that finding a tv would be like trying to find a new car.

I would say go with Samsung. I have a 52" Samsung and it looks a lot better then my other 37" Vizio I have in my bedroom. The Samsung is a lot crisper in High Def.;) And both are 1080P.

Check out Vizio, great value and great picture! If you are going to game on it do not even consider plasma, go LCD.

I just got a 46" samsung and LOVE IT, 1080 with 120hz with 80,000 to 1 contrast. Just remember that Samsung and LG are the best

If gaming is your main use, get the LCD. That's a good price. Gaming really doesn't look as good on Plasmas because you get some motion blur. Plasma holds the advantage everywhere else in picture quality (and is less expensive), but for gaming LCD is preferred.

Either one of those is a good price. The plasma is the better deal (I would want 120Hz on an LCD that size for that much money), but they're both good.

alright... so i found the perfect tv today at best buy. its an LG 37" lcd picture is awesome. its only $500 its right in between what i was originally looking at. Plus, i will have some money left over to get some accessories for it. doubt i will be able to go tv+home theater surround for what i was looking at but i could def. get all the hdmi cables and such and maybe a nice blue ray player. i might be getting it tomorrow. i hope. Modern warefare 2 will be so badass now! haha

I'm a huge Samsung fan myself. Have a 32" LCD in my bedroom and a 40" in the living room. Love both of them. No complaints whatsoever. Have had the 40" for about a year and the 32" for a little over 2 years.

And MW2 is awesome. I think the folks who don't like that game are in the minority haha. As far as cables, I forget the site I used to always get mine from they're SUPER cheap and I've never had any complaints or quality issues. Got my HDMI cables for like 80% than in store.
