This is pretty common on a lot of vehicles. It almost always starts underneath in the seam under the sealer, and creeps it’s way to the top side. I’m a painter in a body shop and we do a ton of warranty hoods for ford and Chrysler. Ford automatically replaces the hood, and Chrysler will only repair them. I’m not sure how Toyota deals with it though. You are well within the factory warranty period to get your hood dealt with. When the shop deals with it make sure they wax oil the front of the hood really well to prevent it from happening again. Good luck.

You’re right in your case, I meant that what happened to mine was not from a water or rust belt issue.

+1 for the hood being previously repaired.

Used cars are such a roll of the dice

It's not lol. It's just the picture that makes it look like the chips are the same color as the paint. That would be obvious to me and I would not have even bothered making the thread if that were the case. Look at the updated pics I posted. I tried to show that there is a visable color difference on the chips. They were not painted over. I had 3 people look at it so far and they all said no evidence of being touched. Still waiting on when the dealer has to see it however, which will be the only opinion that matters, I suppose.

Nice. It seems like the same issue. Funny that he had a few guys saying it was a cover-up repaint also lol. Anyways, it certainly seems like there is moisture in that seam, as that is clearly where it started on mine and then spread from the inside-out. It appeared to be something similar on that guys. I'm still inside 60months, so hopefully I get the same replacement.

Thanks. I'll report back. When I called, the lady sent me to the Service voicemail and said just leave a brief description of the issue and they will call me back and tell me when to swing by so they can see in person. That is also what they did when my grill paint was flaking off. They will have me come up to inspect it, then decide what to do and then schedule me in after someone checks it out (if they decide to take care of it.) They didn't call me back yet, but I would assume today that they will.

Even in the environment in which we live (N.W. PA.) it would be unlikely that a new in 2019 would rust, be repainted, then rust that bad again, in the span of three years. Hope Toyota takes care of your truck !

So just an update to this situation. Had the dealer service manager look at the truck. He tested paint depth etc and determined that there was no evidence of repainting or anything. That being said the "rust through" does not apply and since my truck is out of warranty (which was this summer when it went out, it currently reads 37,800) that there is nothing they can really do. He gave me the card of the shop that they use for collision and repairs and said see what he says. I asked about potentially meeting in the middle on me paying half on a hood replacement and he said talk to the manager there about that. So I'm not sure if that is even possible through the outside business, right? He's not Toyota. Or since the dealer outsources to him maybe he can negotiate with Toyota directly? I was confused by that. I am going to email that business later this afternoon and just see what he says. But ya, so that is the current status. The dealer was polite and everything but it was pretty obvious that he was not interested in handling the situation.

WTF rust through is unlimited miles. Rust-Through Coverage – 60 months/unlimited miles (corrosion perforation of sheet metal)

NOPE bring it back and let them fix it under warranty. WAY WRONG!

Yes, but according to how that is interpreted this situation is not considered "rust through." Sounds like semantics to me. He said it looks like the paint or seam let moisture in and that could not be confirmed that it was a defect.

FUCK THAT NOISE. Your truck has two more years to create perforation and for you to get a new hood, possibly any other body parts. I hope you have a snowy winter and your truck sits in a salt slurry and creates a major hole and you can bring it back every month to have them document how big the hole is. The cancer has started it will only spread.

I had a paint defect that was partially covered even though I was just out of the 3YR/60 000 KM warranty period. Forget what they call it. Courtesy warranty coverage or something like that. I'd ask the dealer or Toyota about that.

To my trained eye that hood looks like it has been repainted. There are 2 PIECES of dirt in that paint. factory does not do that. Get this under some florescent lights and look across the top of the hood panel from a side view and see if you see any more dirt under the paint. [FLORESCENT light show all the sins, trust me.] I bet you will. Good luck to you..

Dude, I'm not going to say it again, it has not been repainted. The dealership scanned the paint and said there is no way it would've been repainted. I already explained how the first picture the lighting sort of messed with how it looks. The 2 pieces of dirt that I assume you are talking about in the first pic are because the picture was taken next to me house/garage which is white and there was also a white overhang partially above the hood. So the 2 light specs are just because of the texture and the light reflecting. I tried to update the best that I could with better pictures. I would not waste anyone's time on here if the hood was obviously repainted over rock chips, dirt etc that a few of you guys think I would somehow miss. I appreciate the input but geez lol.

I'm not defensive. I initially had a body guy look at it and they told me it appeared to not have been tampered and to talk to the dealer before going any further with it. I was at the dealer's today. They had guys look at it and they scanned the paint and said there are no inconsistencies at all in the paint. I had no idea what the scan did so I asked him to explain it. He said if there was any repair done by a body shop or basically anything other than factory, the paint depth should show on there. Everything was at 4 (or .4 whatever it is) all over the hood. At no point did he think there was any repair done to the hood. He straight up said 'Everything appears to be factory." He just said it's past warranty so they weren't going to replace the hood. So I was told to talk to their company that they use for repairs. He said we can potentially talk about Toyota discounting a hood. I sent an email and am waiting to see what he says.
