Anyone here an HR manager? How do you get into this position?

Ok guys, i am looking for some solid advice. I have done sales and been in the people business for the better part of 20 years. I cannot see myself spending the rest of my life in sales. I have always had an interest in getting into human resource because of my ability to help and connect with people. I really think I could make a difference and this would be a career I could see myself doing till retirement. Any suggestions on how to ease into this from a sales career. I have a 4 year business degree and been working since i was 17, i am 41 now. Do i need to get certification? Can this be done online? What pros and cons are there about doing this? Has anyone changed careers in mid-life and had success? Thanks!
