i was planning on buying a 2012 Tacoma TRD Sport with 62k miles for $20,000 this week, however my buddy who works for a Subaru dealership, offered me a WRX for $26,333 Plus tax, title etc.

So for $6,000 more I could have a brand new car with zero miles and a warranty. I love the Tacoma but my favorite car is hands down the WRX.

I'm just wondering if anyone has gone from one to the other as I have only test driven and never actually owned either.

If it means anything I am 22 years old, and pretty big into modifying vehicles as well as hiking/biking/ dirt bikes etc.

Any experience from the boys of taco world?

Don't buy either, get something cheap you can pay cash for, and save your money

I love my buddy's WRX, and I love my BRZ. I've had a truck for years, and last Christmas, I rolled my Ranger. I went 6 months before I got my Tacoma, and those 6 months were painful. I borrowed my brother's truck at least 10 times. But I also do a lot of snowboarding, mtb, camping, and DIY home projects.
Having the bed is just too practical. If you can only have one, go for the Tacoma.

I agree with the cash sentiment. Car loans are one of the biggest and most common personal wealth killers in America. Not sure if your response means you do or don't have cash, but finances aside, I've never seen someone put a dirt bike in a wrx. Apples and oranges really, in my mind vehicles should be practical first, fun second. So ask yourself what you do regularly and which is better for that.

They're both vehicles that hold value better than most vehicles. If you go one way or the other you'll be able to change your mind for less loss than most people.

I'm 52 and have had one non-truck my entire life. I kept it for a year, lost $$$$$$$, and bought another truck.

When you look in the mirror, do you see a car guy or a truck guy?

Thanks man, I think I'm with you there. I've done the car thing twice, but never with my dream car.

That being said I think insurance on the Tacoma will be much lower than the WRX, which means it may make more sense to buy a WRX once I'm no longer a young and risky driver lol

I sold my 2011 WRX 5-Door Limited for my 3rd Gen TRD OR 6S Manual ... WRX is fun but way too low to the ground for me ... I do miss the speed, but I love the utility of the truck (for camping & trails ... I don't need to tow anything). As far as $20K for a nearly 6-year-old truck with 60K miles and no warranty ... not sure I'd go for that. Tacomas are grossly overpriced. On the other hand, my WRX was in the shop several times in the 2 years that I had it ... a lot of TSBs ... and no more hatchbacks. Oh yeah, and speeding tickets ... you're 22 so the insurance on the new WRX will be really high and you will for sure get multiple speeding tickets ... FWIW

    A thing or two...
I've got both. I've had my truck since 2008 and picked up the wrx September of last year. In the grand scheme of things, the truck will always be more useful/utilitarian. The wrx is definitely fun to drive though. Depending on your uses and goals, both can be hellaciously expensive to modify. If you're buying either outright without payments, I'd go for the truck and use the money saved to start modding.

It's a good price for a Tacoma, but not a good price for a used car ... that's all I'm saying.

Owned a 2002 wrx, sold it for a 2006 Tacoma. Love the truck and all the adventures I take it on. Bought a 2005 saabaru as a daily and just sold that after owning it for 2 years. Still loving the truck. You can have a lot more fun legally with a truck.

I had a 2013 WRX hatch for two years (bought new). It was pretty heavily modified as far as suspension, and just bolts ons and a pro tune for the motor. It was a fun car and I loved driving it but when my wife and we're starting a family so it had to go. I bought a 2012 Tacoma with 58k miles to replace it and I'm glad I made the switch. It's the first automatic I've ever owned and it's so much nicer as a daily. No worrying about curbs or taking an angle for driveways. I can actually go to Home Depot and buy things instead of borrowing my dads silverado. You're young so you have to look at what you really want and what suits your needs better, as a daily hands down the Tacoma is better for me, but these are completely different vehicles so it's apples to oranges here.

I have both. 02 Bugeye and 04 taco. I'd take the truck any day over the car. The truck has way more purpose for me than the car ever could.
