I have owned both WRX and Tacoma's. I went from a WRX to a legacy and didn't miss the Rex enough to go back. I went from the legacy to my first tacoma. When my wife and I had our first child we purchased a 4runner and had 3 vehicles, so I listed all 3 vehicles while I waited for my wife's car title to come back from the bank... the tacoma sold in a couple of hours for a full asking price. I essentially drove it for 2 years and 30K for free since I sold it for what I purchased it for.

We ended selling the car next and bought a RX330. About 8 months in having 2 SUV's and having to trailer things that would have gone into the truck bed I found my current '12 Taco.

My advice to you is buy the truck you want to drive for 15 years. Then in a couple of years buy yourself a less expensive used car for fun.

You're asking a Tacoma website if you should buy a Tacoma or a Subaru? Really?

Being someone who has owned multiple Subaru's, still has one and I even worked for a dealership for 11 years, get the truck. Way more functional and better suited for many tasks. You can always get a Subaru later. I like the older GD/GC bodies. I bought my Limited Sti first but after buying a house and missing wheeling/exploring, I picked a 80. Sometimes I wished I would have gotten a pickup, so now I'm looking for a 1st Gen to add, lol.

I don't see how this is a dilemma. Either you have the practical need for a truck or you don't. If you don't, a car will be better for commuting.

If you are a home owner and into anything DIY, you will likely need a truck. If you plan to be a homeowner in the near future, you will likely need a truck. If you have an outdoor lifestyle that involves hauling things like bikes, a truck will do it better. If you go hiking off rough back country forest service roads, a truck would be better. Basically the truck is a practical tool if you need it.

If you are into speed and performance first, WRX all the way. If you just need a commuter, WRX. Looking for a lower new vehicle cost, WRX. Mpgs WRX.

The Taco has the highest resale value of any vehicle in the US, so used prices are high compared to other vehicles.

I have owned both. Wrx was a pain in my ass. Freakin ringland failure was the worst pain in the ass to deal with.

I've got both and the WRX wagon is for sale. I bought the Tacoma for the utility with camping and hauling stuff. Just took my 3rd load of yardwaste to the dump and been getting gravel and mulch by the cubic yard. Also, loading lumber in the bed is much easier than tying it to the roof rack on the Subaru. Camping is so much nicer with the Tacoma, with the camper we sleep on a platform in the back and keep stuff underneath. Even without the camper, it was so much easier to load and access camping gear.

Granted the Subaru was and is still very fast, handles like a dream in comparison to the truck, and lots of fun and I still take it out occasionally... but I also like to go to the mountains and the WRX is much better on the mountain roads, but once you get off road the Tacoma rules.

I used to worry a lot about the underside of the Subaru when off road and only got it stuck once. Tacoma is a true 4wd system for off road.

Wow, both look great. Seeing them both side by side makes me actually affirm that I think
I'd rather have a taco if I could only have one. I just hope 20k for this 2012 is a better buy vs. buying a 2017/2018 Tacoma vs. 2018 WRX in terms of resale value if I decide to sell it in 3 years.

The 2012 will holds its resale very well. The tacomas and wrx/sti are at the top of holding best resale value. I paid around $32k for my Tacoma and its kbb is still around $28k with a little over 66k miles.

I think you go Taco first and then when you can afford a second car you buy a sports car. Or you could just buy a motorcycle, much cheaper!

    +1

I am actually selling this one because I never drive it and trying to find a house for the fiance and I.

    Resized_20160414_161606.jpg

But I understand the feeling. I would get a truck (having it for the utilities is very convenient), then buy a car. It gives you time to really do some research and make sure you're ready. Plus, being on this website and buying a Tacoma, you find that we are very mod heavy and can't resit the urge to do something new to the truck.

    Resized_20170813_162711.jpg

    Good luck!

Tacoma vs. WRX. Like comparing apples to footballs. Since you'r in decent financial condition, buy both! My fun and utility pairing is a Tacoma and a GT350. The truck would be a boat on the track and the car would just be stupid in the dirt.

    A thing or two...
The FA20DIT in the current WRX generation gets great gas mileage. I get better mpg in my wrx than in my 4 cyl Prerunner. The WRX is only costs about $5 more to fill with 93 octane compared to filling the truck with 87 octane.

The previous gen wrx is great car overall. I have a 2012 and the biggest downside to it is the interior quality is poop. Tons of rattles and a lot of things are loose. Big gaps between panels. Things that haven't even been taken apart. But it is daily driven and the family hauler and takes the most miles. The engine has been nothing but reliable for the 100k we have put on it and it handles amazingly and the motor is pretty fast and believe it or not we get much better mileage than many claim. Although it's all stock minus the kn drop in, with mostly freeway miles averaging between 27-28mpg

Not really comparable to the truck in any way.

I was in your position a few years ago, Subaru stopped making the WRX/STi hatchback (which I loved) and buying used was really not much cheaper than buying new. I don't see myself going to a WRX entirely since I have 2 Motorcycles and I find myself using my truck as a truck pretty often. Ideally I would love to have both.:burnrubber::cookiemonster::bananadance::benchpress::plane::poking:
