I am looking for a way to use my spare tire area for fuel. Read the fine print that the Trail'D tanks are not certified for fuel use. So... I was told to look at these for fuel. What gives?

They aren't certified for fuel use for the same reason that replacement gas can spouts without safety mechanisms are "for water use only".

It doesn't meet CARB compliance so they can't sell it for fuel use. I would also imagine that they don't want to face lawsuits for idiots doing idiot stuff, or getting rear ended by a low vehicle and blasting fuel all over a car accident, or any number of things that they could be sued for because their product was present.

More overlander Instagram bling than anything else. The idea is very nice, but the price sucks and all it takes is a rock getting kicked up or come down on a rock on a trail and you’ve got a fuel leak.

So... where I intend to use these I won't be in any danger of a rear-ending. This isn't an everyday kind of use for me. Inspection? What's an inspection?

The jerry can in the bed won't work for me as I want to sleep in the bed (short box version here) and really don't want more in and out at camp. I could make a rack and mount a can off the tire rack out back but I was planning to use that as a table for the stove/kitchen... proximity issue. Obviously any and all of this can change, but this seemed like a reasonable solution.

The last Pinto I rode in did the 1/4mi. in around 10 seconds... not much worry there as I recall. Most couldn't catch the dam thing.

I wouldn't consider it overlander bling since it can't be seen by the passerby or easily glamour-photo'd

No, that’s what makes it perfect overlander bling. Niche product, overpriced, won’t actually get used as much as you’d like cause it’s a pain in the ass to get out the tools to lower it unless you set it up to siphon or to a pump.

I’d sooner just mount an actual metal Jerry can up under there using the existing spare crossmember. Be cheaper and more resistant to trail damage.
