Possibly getting a job at Edwards AFB. Does anyone here work on Edwards and can provide some info on what its like?
I currently live in Nevada so I am also looking for info on some areas to find a place to rent and what areas to avoid. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Closest place to the base that resembles civilization is probably Palmdale, there are good areas and BAD areas to steer clear of. If you don’t mind a drive Wrightwood is a mountain town about an hour from the base.

Lots of guys that work up there also live in Tehachapi. But when it snows the highway that takes you into that town (highway 58) gets closed down. But I hear it's more small town type living but a lot of the guys out there like it.

Tehachapi is a nice town. Small town feel, close enough to (yucky) Bakersfield if you need big town supplies. Assuming weather doesn’t get you, the drive is all highway, minimal traffic.

As for Palmdale/Lancaster, be careful in that area. Very careful. Not a place I would personally ever consider ever living in.

Another sleeper choice is Santa Clarita. Would be a reverse commute. Expensive, but nice area. If you are ok with the drive. I would consider Santa Clarita if job was at Edwards.

Tehachapi would be my pick, probably the coolest Starbuck's I have ever been to. Never lived there but, I have passed through and sure seems better than anything close by I have passed through. I would for sure check it out if I had to live in that area.

Been around the area couple times to off road. Stayed in Mojave once. I didn't mind it but most of my party didn't care for it. Had dinner in Tehachapi after a short hike on the PCT. That was a neat little town but seems pretty far away from the base. Also had dinner in California City. Nicer than Mojave. Ridgecrest was also nice but that is quite a way north. I don't remember exactly where, but north of the base and between highways 14 and 395, we ran into several pot farms. Don't know if they were legal but we avoided the area on the return trip.

If the SR71 is still on base, take some pics for us.

You may want to share what you are comfortable with drive distance and time wise and type of vibe/culture.

Seems like the average commute time is about 45min-1hour. So I guess thats what I would be most comfortable with. I stay home alot so I would want a quiet, safe area. Nightlife isnt a big thing for me.

Wow…….that place is an insane place to work. Almost got out there in the mid-late eighties, didn’t work out. It was actually a blessing in disguise.

Know the politics, know the cost of living, get used to a commute of 1hr + or live in a ghetto.

Not true brotha. There's safe towns nearby. Cost of living is a decent bit but that's Cali in general.

Bring a spare if you go to Palmdale to cover the stolen ones and if you park on the street keep your windows open so people don’t break the glass to get in. I was supposed to do 10 day stints out there for an old job, but I changed my career partly because of it.

Palmdale is ghetto and hood as fuck. A lot of people who used to live in Compton got chased out of Compton by the Latino gangs and they live in Palmdale so it’s heavily gang and meth infested

Mojave was a lot nicer looking when the Ford dealership and MX shop were thriving there. Amazing a dealership existed there. It had a very good feel passing by on the way up to the 395.

Has anybody mentioned Barstow? I have no opinion but seems a pretty straight shot along the 58 which has had significant improvements recently.
