if you wanna race get either the Losi TEN-SCTE, or the AE SC10 4x4 (but be prepared to do some mods to get it race ready)

If you are going to strictly race get Team Durango's DESC410r (hands down one of the best handling trucks out their), but it won't be so well bashing.

SC10 4x4 (thread on RCTech) search: chassis brace, clutch basket, and saddle packs. Those are the major mods that are being done by lot of people (including pros) to get the truck "race able"

TEN-SCTE (thread on RCTech), only real issues is that it is heavy

DESC410r (thread on RCTech) needs: gears for center diffs and sway bars. Requires saddle packs. This is more of a race only truck. (This is the one I'm leaning towards when I save up some money)

I know and agree that SC (short course) is all the rage, but if you wanna "race" get an Assoicated RC1T04.1 or TLR 22T (Losi) stadium trucks, or if buggies appeal to you RC10B4.1 or TLR 22B. Seems you said you had a T3 at some time. Though not as scale in appearance, stadium trucks out jump/handle the SC trucks.

    I agree

There is also the Durango DEX210 (some argue that TLR took design ideas from Durango when designing the TLR22)

Don't forget about 4x4 buggies too (TD DEX410 v3/r, AE B44.1, Losi XXX-4 (rumors of a new TLR wheeler coming out), X-Factory X-7 (when its finished, also made in America))
