lol same here. the video i posted is a perfect example of what they are talking about. Only thing is that all racers are now accustomed to these high bite highly groomed tracks so trying anything less than that leads to a bunch of bitching. i started driving on some super loamy dirt and i had a ton of fun. I wouldnt mind doing it again.

 

sounds like the track in Houston that I always went to (the one that your team driver went to). always loose dirt, dust, and chunks of hardened dirt all over the track, but it was always a blast. Those crappy track conditions combined with my 2wd trucks/buggies are the only reason I ever learned throttle control. would still be gunning it everywhere if I only ever went to the perfectly groomed clay track at Mike's.

 

Colin, if you can't get enough weight into the keel with lead shot you can try tungsten. That's what I used to use in my pinewood derby cars.

 

I should have more than enough with the scuba weights. I was actually thinking about using tungsten putty, which would have zero air voids, but when I looked further into it, the "putty" portion brought the density way down.

if I join a race league around here, i'll just go all out and cast a custom bulb anyway

 

Yup, the putty isn't near the weight of solid tungsten. What are the dimensions of the bulb? I could machine one, that is if the cnc ever starts working at the shop. Acutally, I could probably turn one on the lathe if it's symmetric.

 

the stock one is symmetric, but if I were to cast an aftermarket one, I would either do a winged bulb, or a flattened one. either will give better tracking while heeled over, than a symmetrical one.

it's probably about 8-9'' long, and an inch in diameter at the largest point.

even if it were turned on a lathe, you'd have to mill out the "key-way" where the bottom of the keep fits in the bulb to keep it straight.

i'll see how it sails first though, before getting too deep into keel design. that's a lot of hydrodynamics that I haven't even thought about in the last 5 years.

Put a winch on the brodozer with a redneck engineered fairlead made from a chrome 3mm LED mount.


Now I need a real/scale fairlead and some scale cable and a scale hook.

Buggy body for a local electronics (motors) company owner

 

no running shots or videos yet, but here's after rigging up at the lake. sailed beautifully.

modifications made:
-25% more weight than required in the keel
-All rigging has been completely redone with no stretch synthetic line.
-Plastic anchor points on hull have been replaced with metal fittings.

I still need to tune the sails a little, but other than that, it's running about flawlessly.
