I plan on it. I have no experience with anything other than NiCa and NiHM, so LiPo is new to me. I'd rather be safe..

Balance charge your lipo's each time you charge and it will minimize any risk as well as keep your packs healthy longer. A good balance charger is worth it's weight in gold.

Pulled the trigger and ordered a 2nd gen Deadbolt today. Should be here in hopefully a week. Going with nimh batteries for now, as this is my first time doing anything RC.

Don't spend too much on some nimh. Get one or two of them then some lipos. The nimh are heavy compared to lipo, too.

They make adapters so you can charge USB devices with them. They wouldn't be a total loss if you stay outdoors much.

Ordered up a 3s 11.1v lipo setup, with a balance charger. That's more than enough juice for mine.

The motor can take it, I'm not 100% sure about the ESC. You'll need to read that section of the owners manual.

Do you know what ESC it has?

Sorry. This is from the side of mine. Unless they've updated them in the last two years.

    Build thread in sig...
whomever has the lowest price on the brand/specs I want. not really a single go-to vendor for batteries unfortunately. sometimes it's a big name online retailer, sometimes it's Amazon.com, and sometimes it's the local hobby shop.

In stock form, yes. It will burn up the ESC. Adding an external BEC enables you to run 3S.
I think this is what you have.
    http://www.axialracing.com/blog_posts/787000000

And quoted from the same page:
    Specifications:

    Input Voltage – 6 cell NiCad/NiMH or 2cell lipo**

    Size – 1.7″ x 1.24″

    Weight – 45 Grams

    Motor Limit – 19t

    On-Resistance FET – .0018

    Rated/Peak Current – 106A Peak

    Braking Current – 106A Peak

    BEC Voltage – 5.0V/2A Peak

    PWM Frequency – 6KHZ

**You can run higher voltage batteries such as a 7 cell NiCad/NiMH or 3 cell lipo with the installation of a “Castle BEC”

A BEC is a Battery Eliminator Circuit. It is powered from your 3S lipo, and has settings, or is preset, to dial down the output voltage to the receiver and servos. Or that's how I've always used them.
    http://www.castlecreations.com/products/ccbec.html

You can order a 2S battery for now and get familiar with things and then if you think you need the extra 3.7 volts, you can either get the BEC or upgrade the ESC.
    Clear as mud? :)

For the record, I run a 2S pack in my Axial AX10 and have never felt the need for 3S. It's a crawler after all, more about gearing and motor turns.
