This thread has really taken off-liking the gearing discussions. I don't understand a lot of the car stuff and this has been helpful.

I tried this as well, ended up with a short throttle curve. I think it's the esc/motor combo, like it just turns on at a certain voltage and won't run below that.
The TX is making changes with expo, I've tried with steering, braking is affected as well.

Best way I can think to describe it is that the esc/motor seems to kick on just above the threshold of cogging, like HH intended it that way.

Since I bought the tx to upgrade all my surface crap, I'm gonna pick up a new rx for my Savage, as it is responsive to low speed changes and just see if the expo will work with that. If so, then it's simply the esc/motor combo.

    And a couple pinions too..

Gearing is pretty easy once you learn all the different combinations

Smaller the pinion.....more torque down low and less top end

Larger the pinion.....less torque down low but more top end

Gearing also depends on heat.....I generally gear based off the temperature of the motor

Educate me on brushless, I don't think I know as much as I think I do..
    I understand brushed motors,
less turns equals more rpm and less torque.
higher turns means less rpm but higher torque.

    Brushless,
So if higher kv equals higher rpm,
does a lower kv equal higher torque as well as lower rpm?
Or is it something else that determines torque?

also, does a low kv motor actually have the ability to spin at a slower overall speed than a higher kv motor of the same size? or do they all have a certain rpm they need to start at to avoid cogging?

I picked up a 6 pack of pinion gears.
Before I left, I checked to see just how much mesh adjustment I had left, and it wasn't much. I can go way bigger on pinion and prolly do 3 second 1/4 miles.:D

the pic shows the 28t, inverted, with the motor adjustment as tight as it will go, as a reference to how much smaller I could go.

But to go smaller there wasn't much left. I was thinking a 20t pinion might be the limit.
    The pack I got had 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, and 25.
the 21 fit, and I mean perfect with the adjustment maxed, no room for a 20t.

It's perfect imo for top end, good speed and does wheelies easily.

Low end is still too fast, but it's better. I still think there is room for improvement.

I picked up an Orange receiver to stick in the Savage. If I'm able to dial down the take off speed via expo, then that tells me the bl/esc combo in the TH is gonna be replaced with something better.

Some interesting facts that I am now aware of..
Spektrum DX4C is NOT compatible with the Orange GR300 receivers.

It is intentional by HH to compete with the inexpensive rx. :(

The DX4C IS backwards compatible with DSMR, older DSM2, and DSM.
Not thrilled about this though as Speky's are not cheap.

I did some research last night and learned a bit about brushless motors.
Apparently in a lot of cases a lower KV rating is desirable because rpm is also dictated by battery voltage. A lower kv motor can actually run faster than a higher KV counterpart simply because it can handle more voltage before it hits max rpm.

So armed with that knowledge, I spent some time with the guy at the hobby shop discussing options for my esc. Sensored, programmable is the way to go, but about as costly as the car itself as it also requires a sensorless esc, so I would have to change both units.

After I told him I was running the car on 3s, he smirked and said, "there is your problem".
    wtf?
So knowing that higher voltage will make a bl motor run at higher rpms, less voltage will run at lower rpm's AND also allow for a softer start.

So having no 2s packs and unwilling to buy more, I split 2, 3s Thunder Power packs into 3, 2s packs and lo and behold, the Twin Hammers is controllable at low speeds.
    Who knew. :bananadance:

Hey fellas, I'm sort of into R/C. Have a Stampede VXL 2WD and my boy has also has a pede (monster jam), but it gets boring only being able to drive on flat surfaces. Looking for something that can tackle more terrain. Have considered buying 4WD roller and converting them both, but I think they are going for too much money. I kinda wanted something that could trail run and do a little crawling. I am considering buying myself an Axial Wraith Spawn and converting my the VXL pede to 4WD for my boy. Anyone feel like talking me out of it? :D

Really just looking for thoughts on buying the axial vs buying a 4WD stampede roller. I've never owned anything but Traxxas, so I'm not sure about reliability, durability, etc. Also interested in how much better an Axial is over rough terrain vs a 4WD stampede. I know it's going to be, but how much better?

I'll talk you out of it.... Traxxas makes garbage that doesn't break. Those vehicles are for bashing and doing back flips. Get the axial rigs and enjoy them for a long time until you want to start upgrading things that you don't need.
Yes, sensored brushless at low voltage is more stable at low rpm than the opposite. If you want to crawl, you need to go brushed. You can buy a 65 turn brushed motor and run it on 6 cell and it will have good low end control. They don't make 540 brushed motors for 6 cell, but it would be stable

My wife let me buy what I wanted last year and I got a Holmes BRXL wp and 45 turn torque master pro. I run it on 2 and 3 cell packs. It's slow, but scale trucks don't use wheel speed to get over things, they use driving skill

It's a mess but it isn't done yet... It's only been 12 months

LOL, I destroyed a caster block on my first run. I've also had to replace shocks, the chassis, bulkhead, driveshafts, and some other things. I've been pretty hard on it. That being said, bashing gets boring really quick. You can only do so many wheelies and jumps before it just becomes mundane.

I like what you say about the Axial. I really want to do more technical driving rather than just go fast and crash. That and the 2WD stampede sucks balls in the snow.

You've almost got me talked into it.

Eh, you talked me into the Axial already. Just ordered it, in fact. Got the Wraith Spawn RTR, aluminum steering knuckles and links, and a couple of batteries. I really kinda feel guilty now. I hope its worth it.

    Painted.

and for grins I put the 2.2's from the Axial on it. They clear at full turn and stuff and look pretty darn good on there I think.
