I have a few nitro cars 2 on-road and 1 off road HPI savage. Wish I hadn't wasted the money on them because I haven't used them in years. I don't even know if they would be worth fixing up at this point. May cost more money than worth it. Problem I hated was run them for a few hours and repair them for a week. Can they even be repaired after not running for so long?

RCBS, are you a super saver member at tower? If not I would recommend you become one before you make that purchase. It is only 9.99 (the price of shipping) and your purchase will ship free. On top of that you can use this coupon code (016gr) to get an additional $60 off of that purchase. It may be worth it because you will constantly get coupon codes in your email throughout the year that will save you a lot of money. I am going to rejoin in January.

I like www.nitrohouse.com. Very helpful and have never had a problem with them. Here's the stock photo of mine, don't have a current one.

I have an original grasshopper that I got when I was a kid in the 1980s.

I also have a "reissue". It looks exactly the same but it's all digital.

I just came across this thread. I have to say if your a beginner to rc's youll be happier with an electric. When I was like 14 I got a traxxas s-max and I was not familliar with nitro and I cooked the engine. I now have an electric traxxas rustler that is plenty fast I clocked it at 25 mph with 3300mah pack. But almost as soon as I got it they came out with the brushless motors with claimed 70 mph top speed from an electric not nitro. So for simplicity I would go with electric. They have the performance of a nitro powered with none of the tunning required. Not to mention the cost of the fuel, back then it was like $22 a gallon for 10%. Im scared to see what it cost now. Just my opinion.

The things required to pull bitches
I was into them, had a traxxas 2.5 with an XTM .18 in it and an easystar glider with a 21 turn o/b brushless It was faster than a nitro excellerator. Sold both now I want a Traxxas slash with a brushless setup Those are crazy fast with a capable brushless and a good lipo. And the XTM crawler.

Sounds like you have the carb and the throttle position off.

1.) When you start it and it will go, it usually means that your clutch is engaging because your rpm's are too high, sounds like your off on throttle adjustment.
Granted it should lunge forward a little bit, but it shouldn't drive off fast. Try adjusting your throttle adjust on your transmitter, look down at your carb with the air filter off. Try adjusting the nob or buttons to close the throttle opening more, so it won't let as much air in. You should only see a small opening, this should calm the car some more.

2.) The reason why your truck dies when you give it brake is because your throttle stop screw is not in the correct position. The job of this screw or stop is to stop the throttle from closing all the way, but keep the engine running. And it does this when braking, because it only has one servo to do this.
So what you need to do is adjust that screw, again with the filter off look down at the carb and you will need a small screwdriver for this.
With the transmitter on and car receiver (leave the car engine off) give the car brake using the transmitter. Then while giving it brake turn the throttle stop screw to the right, when you do this you will see the throttle open more. Then adjust to where you want it. You may also have to re adjust the throttle position and vise versa.

If your car still has these problems after adjusting, than your high speed needle is off tune, and maybe your low end needle is off adjustment.
Mostly you will have to mess around with the high end screw adjustment.

This is much easier to explain this and show you in person. If you don't understand, I understand but I hope it does help somewhat.
I would highly suggest getting a r/c car tuning dvd, this one is good.
