I have a Maxx not an Xmaxx. But you understand what I am saying. Is it the end of the world, no. But most people consider that stuff very annoying, especially if someone is used to racing RCs or other brands where there is an "industry standard" and it is pretty easy to take your pick of any aftermarket brand to mod the vehicle. Like I said, it's not hard to find threads, posts, videos to support this, so I am clearly not alone. And I am not even a Traxxas hater, I'm just pointing out that their stance is somewhat polarizing, within the industry. I still like the brand and everything. But I do think they are the most annoying brand to own, by some metrics.

Lol newbie here, ordered a traxxas trx4m, big fan of the aftermarket parts, put a mofo rc motor in this thing and it’s easily 2x fast. Lots of injora suspension parts on the way

Couldn't decide on the black or white wheels. So I went with the gray.
Only an extra 2mm taller, but with the deep dish, they rub pretty good on the front bumper and the very back of the front fender. A bit of trimming is gonna happen.
The stance is much better. Left the foams in and drilled 2 holes in each inner bead lock to let the air flow. They were like basketballs before the drilling.

My Jimny rabbit hole got deeper this week when I tried to do a servo swap and found the Kyosho has a weird integrated servo into the battery tray - and it’s a 5 wire servo. Long store short it’ll be getting a new transmitter/receiver and esc at some point.

On the plus side the .7 wheels came in and today the .7 BFG KM2’s should be in. Once the servo is in the Jimny should be a pretty capable little crawler. I’m hoping I can remove the body lift to get the cg down with the new tires.

I've got a Kyosho Mini 4-runner on eternal backorder. Looking forward to seeing what they're all about.

They are really cool, but take a lot to be capable. There’s something about them though.

That AX24 is kinda cool looking. I like that it comes with 4WS out of the box.

The steering servos on trx4m are really shitty, stripped the plastic gears in multiple places

Seeing this thread got me thinking of my Team Associated RC10 from around 1985 with full bearings (vs bushings which was the norm back then) and Futaba Magnum Jr. radio. I looked up the gold aluminum tub RC10 on ebay and was kind of stoked to see people still run/collect them as vintage equipment.

For anybody that has run 25+ year old electrics: How much faster/better are modern electric racers vs the 80's? I'd guess esc's might be somewhat more efficient and Li-Ion gives several times the current vs. NiCad so several times the power. Are motors or suspension much different nowadays? I was sort of thinking of getting an old RC10 off ebay but wonder how much worse they are vs today's versions.

Team Associated used to make 'the best' 1/10 scale RC buggy back in the 80's, mostly due to its differential which worked well. Who makes the best race stuff nowadays, or is that still a thing?

I've got a couple of original gold pan rc10's, a couple of the limited re-release versions (one sealed in a box still) and several tubs of re-release parts, tires, ect for them. I don't run them and I'm hoarding them, sorry. :anonymous: They're really not meant to handle the newer brushless motors anyway.

Last kit I bought was the Tekno MT410. I set it up with a Tekin 1/8 motor/esc, futaba radio, pro line tires, hitec servo and gens ace 4s lipo. Beefy tank out of the box and lots of aftermarket support for it.

I would buy a newer 1/8 or 1/10 scale buggy or truggy kit and build your own rather than source a bunch of obsolete parts. Any of the race brands like Team Associated, Losi, Mugen Seiki offer good kits. I buy the bulk of my stuff from amainhobbies.

Find a kit or two you like, read the reviews and see what the aftermarket parts support is like.

Unfortunately, the hobby isn't what it used to be many years ago and many companies have gone by the way side. Crawlers and entry level kits seem to be the biggest market now. I miss the nitro rc days. Especially the 1/10 stadium nitro trucks.

Thanks that makes a lot of sense given I haven't thought about it in a long time. And yep, nitros and really RC in general is what got me interested in mechanics

Just remembered that I had a old RC10 black tub that was in a plastic bin since the last time I was into RC. Now I am getting into the crawler side.
And I am putting a little power into my little Losi with a brushless.

20+ years ago you went 2wd for speed, 4wd for agility but substantially slower. with today's batts and bl motors, are 4wd bl electrics still considered substantially slower than 2wd?

am wondering if i should try a 4wd next given the tech has moved significantly since i last threw kilobucks at it lol

Found my old circa 2010 MCPXv1 diy brushless mod upgraded to 2s HP08 main motor for 7500 RPM main rotor and HP03 tail with v1 control board which was the most stable version of board to support modding MCPX to bl. XP10a esc is running BLheli which was cutting edge at the time. Under the horizontal fast flight tail stabilizer is still a keychain cam element that wired directly to a lightweight tramsmitter for optional fpv.

Flying this thing drove a constant stream of replacement parts orders as it detonates on contact with anything but was ideal for trying to push flight skills since the power/weight ratio is insane.

I have one of those, brushed setup. Might even still fly if i can find the lipo for it. Little guy was all the rage when it came out.
Yep, it was used to advance the skills before hitting the sky with the bigger models. Parts were far cheaper and a bi-weekly purchase during the learning phase,
It was definitely a fairly stable little bird for it's size. It just didn't crash very well.

I put the brushless kit on my Mini B. It's a lot more fun to drive. It's a but harder to keep traction on a clay track though. I bet it'd be awesome on carpet.

the old stuff makes for cool wall art but when someone else smacks into it and causes $100 in damage because it broke the bulkhead and a front arm it gets to the point you would rather not run them. Ask me how I know. Other than race kits most the current rc stuff is all rtr. I have built a few of the Tekno kits and enjoy them all.
