I was wondering why he didn’t fly it up pretty high, unless that size helicopter sucked the juice out of those batteries fast.

Most heli's, regardless of size, average about 10 minutes of flight time, give or take.
Best advice I can give is don't even start
The success rate for 3d heli's is extremely low. The cost to stay in the hobby is extremely high.
The advancements that have been made over the years are phenomenal, making it easier for first time fliers. But the setup and maintenance are the same and they all crash horribly.
I have spare parts for days, some I have enough to build a complete bird.
If you can stay at it for a year, and learn a tail in hover, you are farther along than 80% of the rest. A year on average is what it takes to learn a simple tail-in hover without training gear and not crashing during the entire 10 minute flight.

@Deathbysnusnu , I actually have a drone I won at work a few years ago and haven’t even opened it up yet. And I don’t need another money sucking hobby , I already have plenty of those . I also seen a video on YouTube that had huge rc tanks .

Look at the size of that

Helicopters were the one thing I didn't ever want to sell when I worked in a hobby shop. The majority of people who bought them were not qualified to fly them and were of questionable intelligence. If you really want to get into them join your local club. They have enough room to fly them and typically someone with experience to help you. They ensure they are flown safely too as they are really dangerous as Brett mentioned.

Flying any RC should only be done with caution honestly because when you make a mistake (and you will make a mistake) it can cause carnage.

The park flyers are a ton of fun to learn on and the simulators have gotten really good for learning before you ever crash a foamy

I’ve seen a group not to far from here , that do the rc planes and some of those things are huge too. But never seen anything with helicopters . I’m not really worried about space , got around 8 acres and open fields around me. Guess I need to get my drone out and start with something simple .

I bet they would welcome you to observe and you could ask lots of questions.

The good part about modern drones is most of them have a button to help landing them. Landing can be the hardest part

I think the drone I have is 1 that will follow you around and do recording without using a remote after you get it up. And supposedly if the battery starts dying it will return to you and land on it’s on .

The reality is modern electric RC can get to speed enough to cause serious damage. Then add a six cell? Omg.

I recall reading about someone hit by an XMAXX--broke the person's ankle. That shocked me and when I got mine, I quickly understood how that could be. Heck, even the E-Revo hauls serious ass.

Imagine a plane being flown over a road crashing into a car. Or a drone crashing into a birds nest in a national park. There is a reason the faa changed the laws and began requiring registration for these things as they become heavier than balsa wood and easily accessible to the general public

I can literally buy a real skid steer at auction with under 50 hours on the clock for less than one of those 1/14 scale skid steers.

It's pretty much why I put all three of mine on the shelf to collect dust. It's tough to find a place where you can fly, and even then it's not fun explaining to the pearl clutchers that yes, I know the rules, and yes, im legal here. Really, they were more fun to build than they were to fly anyway.

Meanwhile, I'll break out the crawler at a campsite, and a weird thing happens. People approach to watch and complement instead of threaten and complain. I mean, I did get friendly comments when flying, but it was 50/50 between "that looks fun" and "if I see that spying on my picnic again imma gonna shoot it down."

I used to take my crawlers on hikes but the rangers at the local city and state parks have hassled other locals when they see them. I think the cameras on flying RC makes people more paranoid about what's going to end up on youtube or what sense of privacy is violated. The local airfield is the best place for most to fly but as @Deathbysnusnu said there are some places in the mountains that you don't have to worry as much about these issues. The concern is a lipo fire for most RC in nature. We also have to worry about horses getting skiddish around them too so such a variety of issues with shared use of public lands.

There was a time when I asked rangers in both the grand canyon and arches about permission to drive crawlers. They both said I was fine as long as I stayed on trail. I'm not sure that would be the case now 7 years later. Too many bad experiences that they would probably just say no.

This is the main reason I haven’t bought another crawler. I used to love taking my crawler hiking but had too many rangers tell me I couldn’t, even though they said I wasn’t bothering anyone, but rules are rules. It’s so frustrating because mountain bikes and horses cause way more damage to the trails than a little 8 lb crawler.

Next time I go hiking I'm throwing the FCX24 in my hiking bag. Thing can't weigh more than 3 lbs and can easily disappear into the backpack. And with the high-speed motor it'll outrun a bear. Lol.

Anyone have recommendations for good high torque higher speed motors for a trx4m? I have a bronco dedicated to crawling, but I just picked up the high trail f150 and it just screams mud truck to me. I'm thinking I'd like to pick up some chrome beadlocks, boggers, and a motor/gearset that can sling some mud. I've tried the high speed gearset in the bronco before, but it made going slow impossible. I'm thinking a motor swap is the more ideal way to do things.

If brushed isn’t doing it for you then look at the brushless equivalent.
