Did you have the issue with the OEM Traxxas shocks? Thought they had spring clips on some models that would further add some trail and error into the spring rates.

Can't overfill a shock and then expect it to be able to fully compress. The additional rod going into the body during compression takes away oil volume, most shocks have that silicone bladder that creates a small air pocket to help assist with this.

Old School Tamiya Kits are the BEST!!!! I hate the fact that almost all of the cars in the RC world now come ready to run. They should be like they were back in the olden days when we had to put them together so we knew exactly how to be able to fix it when it did break. We could tear apart a differential, we could fix suspension, we could upgrade the entire ESC unit and battery system. Putting it together was half the fun.

The OEM shocks were just losing their responsiveness and starting to leak a little so I ditched them. Still have them, just in the parts bin.

I'm going to empty the shocks and try again later tonight to see if I can get it right

Drift RC's are mostly kits still, had a great time slowly piecing together mine earlier this year.

I'm no expert on shocks but I am retired and have way to much time on my hands. I've had excellent results with a semi-droop set up with Desert Lizard shocks.

I use soft springs top and bottom on the rear of my Ascent Fusion. I've seen my rear shocks kind carry and not fully extend on side hills. The shocks will fully extend when doing "frame twisters" or whatever they're called in your neck of the woods. I have some 60wt shock oil coming so I can get some of the bounce out of the short top/compression springs. Either way I'm a proponent of semi-droop for my environment.

One more thing that really calmed my rig down was extending my wheelbase from 313mm to 322mm. It seemed to be top heavy and the articulation was not really optimized. That said that all this is being said right now and subject to change on a whim. :burp:

Would your shock angle have anything to do with the droop limit in certain scenarios, such as the side-hilling mentioned?

No, it looks to me to be more of the load on the front shocks and the angle of the front axle that determines whether it does it. Here's a picture where it doesn't extend fully.

Edit; Upon looking closer at these pictures maybe you're right? It is a pretty steep angle on the front. I feel the longer spring is definitely pulling the weight down as best it can. Maybe I'll try some medium springs on there and see if it pulls down more. I have the time.

What do you guys think about not running springs? Just a shock with oil at each corner, seen some people on Reddit doing it

I tried it but for me it just seems too loose and kinda of unsettled my rig when a tire would lose traction. Perhaps it would be ideal with heavy shock oil? Also wouldn't that unload the front too much on a steep climb?

I also tried it with the short springs to limit the down travel, which was a little better for me, but still I felt like it didn't have enough control. The 60wt oil arrives today so I'll be able to give a "no springs" review in the next day or so.

    Report back on your findings

I re-oiled the Injoras with 20wt last night but had to call it a night on RC stuff right after I re-assembled the last one, will see how it came out today

TRX4M still... take #5 in dialing in the suspension

Yeah, I've tried too many combinations to be sure but that's what makes it fun...sort of.

Well my latest packages are going to be a 1 to 5 days late. :( So I changed out the pinion gear today in anticipation of my cheap Amazon special 2.2 wheelset arriving someday. They were an impulse buy, but they were like getting the tires and foams free. Although I doubt the foams and tire are great, at least I can try out the size and I do like the wheels.

So my sons truck has been in training mode since we got it since he is new to it all. When he was at daycare I put it in normal mode to mess with and holy crap, didn't expect it to be so fast.

I kept wondering why my brushless Grom kept spinning out - turns out I blew the front diff and it was mostly RWD - I have the $45 metal diffs on the way. Hopefully can get some fun runs out of this truck soon.

That'll do it. For some reason I thought they were already metal, hopefully the new one holds up better.

The Mojave Groms have an updated v2 diff but they’re still plastic. I’ll update with how the metal ones hold up.
