The filter is completey within a plastic case. There is no way to access any of it except the valve at the top. It's not one of the filter types I've seen where you can take the membrane out.

You mentioned that you have a softner up steam of your RO. That could be your problem. Your filters are getting plugged from your softened water. Drinking water should never be connected to softner.

The RO can remove sodium much easier than calcium so the softener takes care of calcium and RO takes care of sodium. Works flawlessly like that.

Sorry Keith , semi off topic , but what is the ratio of dumped water to purified water in these systems ?

    Anyone ?

Just called plumbing contractor that I use for my general contracting business. He said never soften drinking water, and that water causing your RO filter problem.

You can believe him or not.

Just thought I would check things out for you.

    WPB sailor?

This information is how the systems on CG boats are operated but we're pumping salt water and separating it so we have a couple more filters than your standard home set up. Is your prefilter filled with sand/grit/rust? Could be like others have said an extra large amount of contamination entering and clogging the filter. Should be able to pipe in a media filter between your feed pump and prefilter if that's the case. I just checked the manual for that system and the troubleshooting guide didn't necessarily hit your problem. Might be worth it to give them a call or email and see if they can't point you in a better direction. http://www.ecodynewatertreatment.com/owner-center/product-manuals/

I've read between 5:1 and 15:1 online. But it's only for the drinking water so it's not that much in a bulk basis. Whole home RO would waste a lot of water.
Thank you for calling him. I don't know a single person in this town that doesn't have a water softener and an RO downstream of it though. What Isu2014 states below is what I've been told by all the professionals down here.
Unfortunately as I stated above there's no way for me to check if its clogged with dirt or dust because its a completely sealed filter cartridge. I suspect that's what's happening though.

Can you tell me more about the media filter? That sounds like what I need to alleviate this problem.

Yup. Mines is about 7:1, and only for drinking water.

If you're replacing the whole filter then next time go ahead and take some snips to it and see if it isn't packed with some kind of sediment. The fact that all 3 filters in your system look like the same thing just says it's being past through an RO membrane not meant to separate that much sediment. Those things are somewhat fragile and should be screening water not sand. Whirlpool:rolleyes:

I've been looking for a home model media filter to check on prices but they are all very large and probably expensive-not under sink friendly more of a point of entry unit. Basically it's using one or more type of media (sand, charcoal, garnet) to catch varying levels of sediment depending on the micron rating. They are generally larger than your other filters so they can absorb more sediment before their efficiency is reduced an most are automatically self cleaning so it reduces time spent doing that as well. I would definitely chop into those filters first though before dropping the kind of cash on ^^^that or any other filter.

Edit-Just saw only for drinking water. Did you guys try a Brita filter on the tap first? Not quite the same and if your feedwater really is that bad you might be changing those just as frequently.

Yeah the brita doesn't get the job done with our water out here.

Would I still need that $500 filtration system if I just want a prefilter for sediment upstream of the RO?
