Mrs Toyota was trying to decide what to make the kids for dinner one night so she yelled downstairs to the little Toyota kids " what you want for supper kids" and they yelled back " Taco, ma".

I agree with the above post, haha. But Tacoma being a city/region goes along with the trend with other auto manufactuers naming trucks and suv's after locations such as Lake Tahoe, Yukon, Sequoia National Forest, etc..

    From Answers.com:

Toyota has named a popular line of pickup trucks the "Toyota Tacoma"after the city.

    From TTORA:
From the Salish Indian word for the mountain that provided water to their tribe(later changed to Mount Rainier). The name suggests images of strength andpower.

    From Wikipedia:
“Part-way through 1995, Toyota introduced the new Tacoma in the United States. It is named for Tacoma,Washington, a city that is located near the Cascade Mountains, and particularlyMount Rainier, and is thus associated with the rugged, outdoor lifestyle used to market pickups.”

    http://www.ehow.com/facts_4911805_history-toyota-tacoma.html . . . “The Toyota Tacoma is named after Tacoma,Washington.”

http://www.newgencars2014.com/2014-toyota-tacoma/ . . .”The first generation Toyota Tacoma was introduced in 1995. It was named after the famous city in the state of Washington.”

I guess it depends on where you get your information from. Toyota does use Native American names in naming their vehicles such as . . . Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, Sienna.

Regardless of how the Tacoma received its moniker Drunken Sailor, I’m glad I have one. :duel::duel:

But Highlander60's explanation does seem more plausible . . .

in the 70's Toyota changed the stout here Pickup, everywhere else got the name hilux, but the marketing people figured the US market like PICKUP better.

the MR2 was MRS over seas and toyota called it the MR2 here because they figured the American consumer would buy less if the car was a mrs. lol (midship runabout 2seater)
