Ok time to bump up a old thread...

Hurricane irene is heading right twards me... what can I do to protect my tank??? We will most likely loose power and I do not have a generator...

Is there some kind of battery powered heater that will get me by?? Its a 55 gallon tank with 7 cichleds.. how long will it take for the water to cool off without a heater?

Any help will be awesome.. I have until sunday to figure something out..

I have never seen a battery powered heater but don't think cold water will kill them that quick. You could get a battery powered air pump to keep oxogen going. Hope it's not next to a window.

When i lost power for a week i changed abot half the water every day or so to try to keep the temp up also help keep up oxygen levels. i did not loose any by doing that just keep an eye on your thermometer and treat the the water when you change it, good luck!

Ok I will grab a battery air pump if I can find one today...

Its in the room with a window but not in direct sun.. would that further hurt things??

And I will not be able to do water changes.. I have a well so no power equals no water.. I can do with bottle water but I will have no way to warm the water up....

So hopefully everything will be ok... and its safe to say as soon as power returns do a hefty water change asap??

    Thank you

    Micky,
no need to worry about temperature for your cichlids. alot of cichlids can be raised in outside ponds in Florida. but a battery powered air pump would be needed if the power outage lasts more then 24 hours
