It's all black base with dirt and desert dust blended in now a days...I'll try to get a photo "as it sits."

Flip Flop blocks out the garage light. but as you can see after a few tours in the desert it doesn't really matter what the bottom of your truck looks like. The main goal is to make it back home.

Is there any difference between the factory front skid plate for a 2022 Off Road and the white/red TRD one, besides the color?

Yes, the stock isn't quite as long, and needs to be removed-ish to change the oil filter, and is thinner. TRD "accessory" plate has a door for the filter access, and is thicker. Thicker = stronger.

I have the stock one, so it's already black. I'd just tape off the skull/crossbones and rattlecan it in white, then cover the whole thing in matte gloss (I think)

Yep I learned this the hard way. Bought a nice new shiny TRD skid. Decided to have it powdercoated with same black as bumpers, sliders, etc. First time I took it out to the desert, scratched it all to hell. About a month after that, nearly cracked it in two on a large rock.

I then ended up going to RCI steel skids and went through that new honeymoon phase once again. I then managed to bash in the filter access door and had to buy a new one. I finally reached the point where I just don't give a shit anymore what it looks like under there.

It trd skid is 1/4" aluminum. The stock skid, if you want to call it a skid, is very thin steel. Night and day difference.

Your welcome! Some of the painted ones look pretty good but I kinda like the factory TRD color myself, especially on a magnetic gray truck.IMG_20220523_201618060.jpg

The factory grey colour of my knock off TRD skid would not suit my truck. Paint was the only option before I even installed it. I am very happy with the results.

Have the Lostar version coming in next week. Any prep besides sanding and priming?

planning to do the exact same thing in a couple months. That Lostar plate seems to be the best bang for the buck. Let us know how your color changing went.. thx

It's been cold since I got the skid so I just put it on as is and will run it plain this winter. Once it warms up in the spring I'll tackle the color change. The plan is to scuff it up with some 3m pads and put down a couple coats of Rust-Oleum primer/paint. Will definitely post when I finally get around to it.
