I installed an aftermarket one. The OEM option would have been nicer with wiring but while I ran the wires I ran a bunch of extra for future upgrades. Knowing that it is locked when I walk away is peace of mind.

I like mine since I rarely lock my back window or drivers side windoor. Figure the tailgate being locked keeps some people out since they’d be in a tricky spot if I cam upon them and they had to crawl out of the back window.

It should be wired to passenger side kickpanel and door locks. If the factory kit is wired correctly, just change the settings so all doors lock/unlock with drivers door. Then tailgate will do the same.

I got the OEM kit and installed it myself and I have zero regrets. I have a factory tonneau cover and I pretty much always have something in the bed, so being able to just hit the lock button on the key fob is super convenient. Same with unlocking it without having to get my keys out. I also like the fact that if I forget to lock the truck, I'll get a notification on my phone and I can just use the app to lock the truck, tailgate included.

It is wired that way. The doors unlock when the truck is shut off, but the tailgate doesn't. Someday I'll dig into the wiring.

Nothing to do with the wiring then. Read your manual and change the settings so all doors unlock with drivers door (single unlock push). Then you should be be all set.

Well then something is not right then. It should be connected to the module for the passenger door, anytime that locks or unlocks the tailgate should as well. I installed mine and am not sure it would even be possible to screw it up since it’s plug and play.

I passed on a locking tailgate. I open the tailgate often with the doors locked. I don’t have a need to lock the tailgate. If I had a tonneau cover or shell, it might make sense.

I hear the Tacoma tailgate itself is an item that is frequently stolen. On yours I believe replacement is around $1500. For this reason alone I am considering the power lock kit

I hate to sidetrack the thread, but... why is the bed mat a no brainer? Asking from the perspective of someone who doesn't actually own a Tacoma yet (picking it up Monday).

    I contemplated it.

I don't lock my tailgate most of the time but still lock it frequently.

Since I have an MT and a regular key it isn't that much hassle to unlock with the key if I need to lock/unlock.

Because the composite bed (without the bed mat) is slicker than snot on a doorknob!

    Installed OEM kit, very easily.
I open and close my tailgate multiple times daily. I like the idea when I lock my truck everything is locked and I dont have to check the tailgate.
    Should have come with it.

The composite bed surface is surprisingly slick like an ice rink. You put something near the gate and come to a mild stop and you hear whatever you have in there smack into the front of the box. A rubber mat helps limit this. Factory is a great option but there are others. I cut down a free F150 bed mat for my truck. Works great.

I got the pop and lock actuator and have the Keyfob set to lock/unlock all 5 doors with a single click. Love it - no regrets! Should come that way from Toyota.

This exactly why I installed the OEM power lock, I have the 2021 model with backup camera, the theft will just cut my camera harness to steal the tailgate. It will cost way more than just the tailgate, I will have to replace BU camera and harness.
I think you will regret not getting it if your tailgate is stolen. OEM one is very quiet and most place sell it less than $200

Some of us prefer our cargo slides around and slams into the front of the bed, then the tailgate, then the front again -- all while backing out of the driveway.
