I hate that I’ve even opened this can of worms.... but we are planning a Colorado and Moab trip for this time next year, and well, I mean you need these right?

Anyway, I thought about the Harrops. But the rolling back and unlocking diff and engaging again kind of defeats the purpose. I know that’s a very specific scenario, but I feel like it would happen often.
I have always heard of leaks with the ARB, but I want onboard air anyway...

So you have to roll backwards to unlock the harrop locker? Even with OBA if an ARB or air locker leaks you are dead in the water so to speak for having a locker you'll still have the open diff so it doesn't completely leave you stranded just no locker. Just rolling backwards to unlock doesn't sound horrible to me if you can lock it at anytime and not have to do anything else. Since you can unlock it after the big obstacle roll back a bit and then proceed down the trail. Not sure what the failure mode or common issues there are with a Harrop or similar but I'd look into them. I know after hearing numerous issues with air type lockers leaking ARB mainly that I am strongly considering a different route.

Is that devil's advocate enough for you?

Oh and i would go ahead and have ECGS send you the oil unless you can get their recc. oil shipped to ya cheaper. Looks like solid builds to me.

The diff if you have to rock back and forward to get momentum, unlocks and relocks to continue traveling in reverse. Then when ya go forward again it has to unlock and relock. Granted it’s 1/4-1/2 a rotation to do the movement.
I was all for an e-locker till I found out about this. And as much as I hate to admit wound rather have air locked since I can filter the moisture out of air.

Hmmmm that's interesting. Even still that isn't bad at all not sure if you'd even notice that especially if you engaged it before you even started on an obstacle. Most that I see don't roll backwards on an obstacle so it wouldn't unlock. If you have to back up on an obstacle and reposition that could be annoying having it lock and unlock. I can also see where if that happens then you loose even more traction on a steep climb and that could be bad.

Don’t do this... don’t make me rethink my decision to go air locker....
air is ~$300 cheeper than e locker

This is my issue lol. I was all for E-Locker. Then reading up on how they change direction while engaged, not making an obstacle, rolling back some and then stopping to try it again, it’s has to roll forward to engage again. Air would do this... it’s like $800 total overall you’d save going Air over ELocker (but then a compressor too)

Air wound be very minimal rocking back. The pins wound stay engaged but there is some built in play less than 1/8 a rotation.

I’ve already got the arb twin for tire inflation. So I was only comparing the diffs directly. Have heard about the air leaks in the diff and that wound be a costly fix having to yank the diff again.

    :rofl::rofl:

Bad thing is I am kinda at this conundrum too. But I have heard of several guys having issues not just on the Yotas but other ones as well. Air leaks past the double O-ring seal in the diff where the air travels to engage the locker. Rolling back and forth just doesn't seem like that big of deal to me. I remember having to do that on old fords with vacuum auto hubs to get them to lock and unlock. I mean it seems like it would go pretty seamless.

I mean I have an air set up that can easily be adapted to work with lockers. That's really not a huge deal since you should have something already IMO

Rocking to lock and unlock is not a big deal unless it’s on the obstical...

Our local diff builder hasn’t done an e locker yet.
Wonder what Black Friday deals will happen on them?

Yea... no. Even though I’m awd I don’t want a locker I can’t control back there.

@ovrlndkull although I’m gonna add a gear driven lsd up front

    AWD???

Yeah I want full control, you are right on certain obstacles or times having it unlock then relock could be a bad thing. Damnit more things to consider.

It's not that bad. I daily drove mine for a couple months after I installed it. I still drive it like once a week.

I wouldn't go with anything but a selectable locker up front though. Trying to turn double locked is impossible sometimes

And it's better than changing a 3rd member every 3 months because an ARB air locker is leaking. I went through 3 air lockers in a year

I know a few guys running the lunchbox style lockers in the rear and so far so good. The Detroit or similar would be a much stronger unit for sure though.

    Yep :D

I’ve seen how fast a front locker will break axles... don’t wanna put a locker there (I know my self and will be breaking stuff constantly with it) I’m thinking with lsd up front and the lsd mid it’s not going to affect starting at all and give me added traction

Guys have done many of them and had them done correctly too and yet have had leaking issues it's just 2 O-rings that keep them from leaking eventually they will leak just like any other seal.
Ok I am cruising your build thread and don't really see it.
