Remember when you were with The Beatles? (sic) That was awesome.

Not even kidding, your contributions are what made me go with the PM1236 in the first place. Was going to get something smaller, glad I didn't.

I'm just referencing Chris Farley's star struck interviewer bit from SNL, when McCartney was on.

Nah, I'm @bakrch over there, mostly a lurker but have been posting more lately due to my increasing interest to upgrade my mill.

    Oh duh, haha.

Wow, crazy, never would have thought to see someone with PM machines here! This is where I hang out most of the time (well off and on).

    Nice setups you got!

Thanks! I have my eye on their bandsaw now. Plenty of other options to get the same (more or less) saw for less, but I really like Matt and his crew at this point and want to keep giving them my business.

Picked up this old Southbend Model A not too long ago. Need to go completely through it. Visual inspection shows it's just dirty and not too much wear but we'll have to see when I get it cleaned up. I bought it for $300. It appears to be set up for metric threading. I already ordered replacement parts to replace the definitely broken ones like the change gear handle and the not pictured here belt tensioner. I will also need to sew up a new leather belt for it. Lots of work, not sure if I will be doing a paint job or just cleaning it and replacing all the wicks/re oiling it.

I also got a steady rest and I do have the tailstock for it.

There is lots of play in the cross slide so I will have to figure that one out too. Not sure if it really matters though.

I know this is an old thread. My Uncle gave me a 50's? Bridgeport that's 3 phase. for about $75 I got a phase converter from MSC and haven't had any issues. I don't use it that often so I am not sure how they would hold up to commercial use. I'm ashamed to say I only use it as a drill press since I haven't had the time to play around with it. But when you need to drill a 1" hole through 3/4" steel you don't have to try too hard. Came in handy when building my log splitter.

I called the power company and asked them for 3 phase service for my house and I never heard someone laugh so loud...

Which company? If it were my employee I would fire him immediately.

Did he explain why they couldn't run it?

A 'new' lathe appeared at my house today...

    20190926_184215.jpg

    It's a Hendey... manufactured in 1919.

The pic is from the craigslist ad...

It is in very nice condition, especially considering it is 100 years old...

Run one of these at work, 14” bore, mostly used for taking a 500mm glass disc and shaping it into a cone.

I got one of those too. Have you found the yahoo group for them? It has a lot of mods and upgrades. I swapped my motor to a 3phase with VFD. Now I can dial in the RPMs anywhere from around 10rpms on up. And with the VFD, the e-Stop applies full power in reverse to stop it. So then I rigged up an external switch to the e-Stop, that mounts in a magnetic base. When threading to a shoulder, the e-stop will stop it within a few thousanths every time.

I thought of more stuff -

If you get a vfd, its suddenly a lot harder to know what speed its turning. So I disassembled an opical tachometer, and soldered an extension on the transmitter and sensor so I could mount it separate from the display screen. I painted the spindle black inside the lathe head and put a reflective sticker on it. Then got a cheap 9v transformer that powers it any time the lathe is on. The tach is all inside the lathe head, except for the display screen.

Another great cheap mod for any lathe is the low cost DRO scales, such as the ones from igaging. I have these mounted on every direction of movement on my lathe and minimill. I get the cheap lithium button batteries in bulk. It doesn't matter what brand I get, they always last until I forget to turn them off :D
