Hey OP! I can't tell you anything on 3rd gens but here's my take on TRD packages:
They are great but the difference in the sticker price is huge. You could get everything to make it a "TRD" yourself with money to burn BUT if you get the TRD off the lot you can finance everything easy. Otherwise buying a used TRD gets you good value. Hope that helps you a little bit.

SR5, they ride better and are cheaper and look better. the money I saved I can mod the truck and still be further ahead.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
That was like early 80's, and since then SR5 has been used on many different models and is regarded as the higher up trim. It doesn't make sense to me either. Kind of like how GM uses "SS" on front wheel drive V6 cars, and 4x4 trucks and Trailblazers now, when back in the muscle car era SS usually meant big block V8, RWD, tire melting, gas guzzling hot rod that could pull impressive 1/4 miles right out of the factory showroom without much modification.

If you have the coin go for the TRD with the Upgrade Package. You won`t be sorry.

Ditto. I would like that truck as well but you can't order the moonroof as a distinct option. #fail

I went with the sr5 over the trdor because initial cost and fuel economy. I would have loved to had the crawl control and the cooler looking wheels, but I would never use the crawl control (except to try it out once) and the offroad won't get as good of highway fuel economy.

One can never have too many light bars.
I went SR5 because of the price. I was 5 months out of college and one month into my starter big boy job. 30K seemed like a massive amount for a vehicle at the time to me and I couldn't fathom 35K or 38K for a 4runner.

I didn't get a 3rd gen yet but I was thinking the same thing.

The only thing I'd be missing out on is the hood scoop if I went sr5 vs sport. Because I didn't plan on getting the premium tech package anyway.

I like the SR5. Perfect trim when the extra bells/whistles aren't necessary and just want a reliable truck with basic functions. I swing for the TRD OR just for the rear locker. Otherwise the SR5 IS perfect and the price is unbeatable, especially considering what the resale is. Having 4WD alone is all you need most of the time.

Why wouldn't the O/R get as good of highway fuel economy? Unless I missed something on the 2016's, the post '16 TRD trucks have always been just like the SR5 only with a locker, different suspension and more options.. I don't think the gearing in the axles is any different but I could be wrong.

The offroad doesn't have the front diffuser. Guarantee you it effects mileage. Every little thing effects fuel economy.
