I hear you, just not ready to buy a full size yet, trust me I want to be a safe as possible that's why I'm researching. I did look at some sundowner that were full aluminum, and very small, even fully loaded we would have plenty of wiggle room weight wise. on the stability thing with live animals. Towing with my uncles 2002 v6 tundra I did feel some movement with my horse in an open stock trailer but was manageable and never felt unsafe. I'm hoping to get something with dividers so they fit snug and get rid of shifts in weight distribution. Hopefully something where the weight of the horses are over the wheels.

This is my Tacoma pulling a two horse with dividers. I was dumb and drove from northern Wisconsin to middle of Illinois with it…then back. It was not enjoyable but the truck didn’t hickup mechanically at all and it was well within spec. But the sway of those animals back there just isn’t fun in a midsize truck doing 60-70. I should mention I weighed down the front of that trailer too so it had about 10-15% tongue weight of the whole load. Still sucked lol

Properly equipped a Tacoma will pull around 6500 lbs under ideal conditions. That means with only a driver in the cab with no other passengers or cargo. On level ground and at sea level. Deviate from any of those and you need to reduce the amount you're towing. Around 4000-4500 is a reasonable max under most real world conditions.

    OR:

It will haul around 1000-1200 lbs in the truck including passengers, driver and cargo. Pick one, but not both. Hitch 6500 lbs back there and you'd better not have anything in the truck. Put 1000 lbs in the truck and you can't tow a 1000 lb trailer.

That is the biggest difference between light duty trucks like a Tacoma or even 1/2 tons for that matter. There isn't a 1/2 ton on the road that will actually tow what they are rated to tow with much, if any extra weight in the truck. Once you get to a 3/4 ton truck then you can actually tow the weight they are rated for and still have a little payload for at least some weight in the truck.

Seems like the type of trailer I'm looking for. Wouldn't drive it that fast or that far for sure. Not with the tacoma anyways. You know what brand it is? Or a good way I can Google it to find something similar?

PFL Customs roof rack, Body Armor Hi-line bumper. X20 Gen 2 Smittybilt winch, PFL Customs bed rack. Dirt bound rack supports.
16x7 enclosed cargo trailer. Trailer weight 5867 pounds, towed it from California to Alaska. Have red arc trailer brakes, kings 2.5 rears OME medium leaf springs sat fairly level easy ride. Had plenty of power even through the mountians, highly recommend red arc trailer brakes, plug and play worked amazing.

Also tow my flat bed open trailer often pulls amazing!

Honestly the thing is from 1961 and the model I couldn’t tell ya as it’s been repainted a couple times and new parts added over the years. We found it on Craigslist for 1000 dollars a few years back. It does pull nice (if not doing 60-70 lol) and no complaints. Now behind my 2500 this thing is a joke and I’ve taken it over the whole county.
