Yeah, I wasn't advocating that one I linked to, just a random one I found to kinda see whats out there.

I still like the idea of a separate camera like the ones you posted. I guess I can just see getting a whole new lock/handle, and the dumb handle breaking.

If you find a proper camera, please link it. I believe taking a pop-lock and dremel-ing a hole for a camera is the cleanest and cheapest way to go. Now, we just need to solve the 180-degree camera issue and find one that can spot both taillights at that mounting position.

The pop lock in that Amazon link just slides under the OEM handle.

Surly will do. I already killed one esky camera mounted in my trailer receiver - road dust "polished" the lens to the point of "I see nothing" :). Here is the comparison of the camera after 3 years of use and the new one.

Overland under budget did a cool video of how he set up two cameras, one for front and one for rear. He says he used the front one for arching steep hills without a spotter. It’s on YouTube

I currently have a Garmin backup camera that is wirelessly connected to my gps. The gps is the monitor of course… it’s hardwired to the reverse lights for power but is wireless to the gps. I personally wouldn’t recommend this setup as it doesn’t show a very clear picture. Garmin also makes a battery powered one, but I don’t think that would be worth the money. The only positive thing I can say about the garmin unit is you can have multiple cameras, one one your truck, and one on your trailer or whatever. Sometimes it takes as long as 5~10 seconds to connect to the camera and an image to appear, by that time I’m already driving forwards.

I would personally choose a wired system of some type if I had it to do again. I’m running my factory radio, and really feel awkward looking down at it while backing up….I’ve had one before.

I would probably recommend getting one built into your rear view mirror, that is hardwired. Not gonna be cheap though. I also had a rydeen gps rear view mirror with camera. It was a small display, and I’d probably still be using it if I could figure out how to update the maps on it.
It had the best day/night camera picture, but the display was very small.
