Anyone regret buying a 2016 tacoma?

As with most brand new redesigns, im expecting some big flaws. anyone had any major issues that they would turn someone else away from buying it? deciding between a 15 or 16 tacoma, i love the new look but my dad was a car dealer and always told me never to buy the first year of a new generation of any vehicle because theyre bound to have bugs and other issues. Thanks!

I have some regrets but they don't have anything to do with this Toyota. If any of the bugs people talk about show up, that what the warentee is for.

Bugs and issues occur on any year. If you plan on waiting for a perfect new car, you will never pull the trigger. That is what warranties are for. FYI, I have no issues at 2500 miles FWIW.

Here are the stats on Tacos from two sources (problems per 100 cars):
(notice there is no correlation between new model years and problems)

I bought my '15 as the '16s were coming out because I firmly believe in the first year bug issues. Having spent 10 years in a dealership, unfortunately I saw it all too often as a salesperson and then as a service advisor. There's only so much testing a company can do so unfortunately, selling thousands of vehicles that just came out proves to be a better testing ground- inadvertently. Now we are able to see some of the issues- some are minuscule, others may prove to be more. In 2.5 years when my lease is up, that truck will now have been out for three years and I can hop over if I choose. Hopefully the new issues will have been resolved by then.

my 06 was great and I love my 15.

Dog friendly, with dog snot on inside windows, with of course a/c! Mag 16 inch wheels from a Mazda.
I could see if it's a completely new different model, as far as staying away from not buying the first year. This seems to be just an upgrade, which to me would be no big deal. My complaint is car manufacturers in the 50s'/60s' would make yearly changes in design/style. Now it seems to be 5 years or longer, Tacoma last revision was 11 years ago! I would buy a 2015 simply they would more reasonable in cost, versus the high demand for 2016.

I thought this 3rd gen to be more than a "refresh" like the gen 2.5 was- '12-'15 where they only changed basic sheet metal. Doesn't this have new engine, trans, computers, skin, interior, electronics, size, specs, etc...? If so, I'd certainly consider it to be different in everything but name. According to people who've driven both, there is a vast difference.

I bought my Victory Gunner back when they first came out- it's got the same engine, trans, seat, and many other parts as the other bikes in the Victory Motorcycle lineup put into a different body. I had no fear as the motor, trans and electronics had been out for years meaning it was simply a new name, headlamp, and rear fender(basically)- nothing new to experience.

But you do also bring up a good point on the costs.

As a former service advisor/asst mgr I can tell you that one of the biggest issues with new cars/technology is that customers often know more about their vehicles than techs to. I remember many times when an issue would come up and the techs had not yet had available factory training to tackle the problem. Sometimes, techs out for training causes backups and personnel issues in the shop and owners don't want to lessen the load or lose money by having techs out. It's a vicious cycle.

Edmunds used to have a similar thing, but it is being revamped per their site.

They may get their data from similar sources, but there are a few differences, so not sure. It is based on owners complaints, so it can't really be used for anything but a relative year to year comparison. The actual numbers have to be taken with a grain of salt.

Because it's a ridiculous exaggeration and it doesn't really ring true anymore if the OP did any bit of research. The 2009-2012 Tacomas still had over a dozen recalls in each year and that generation started in 2005. The new Corolla had one recall in 2013 and one in 2014. The new Corvette, in its first year, placed third overall in the country in the Cars.com Worry Free Index. Being first in a generation only means that if you do have problems, there might not be a lot of documentation or experience with that problem at the beginning.

Secondly, buying a new truck under comprehensive warranty offsets these problems. If you buy a used or certified one that has no warranty or just a powertrain warranty, you are not as well covered on an individual basis, regardless of how predictable you think the pattern failures are on it.

If it's something like "well I don't think the new Tacoma has enough horsepower", that has nothing to do with buying the first of a generation.

Except for the holes in the lca, I can't think of a single 'problem' that is unique to this generation.

All these people talking about how dumb it is to avoid buying the 1st of a new gen have some good points, but things like software updates and replacement parts are just not as available when you buy the first year of a new gen. Also, as I learned with my 8th gen civic, sometimes they don't discover things like an improper alloy for the engine block for the first year or two. Your dad gave you advice because he's a play-it-safe guy. I tend to agree.

Now, to answer your question. Do I regret it? HECK NO!! I love this thing! Although my turbo-charged/intercooled 1990 Volvo 760 station wagon - with sunroof, power everything, and car phone - comes pretty close, this vehicle has been my favorite vehicle ever. And it's really hard to beat being able to lay down a back seat, rolling out a futon mattress, and having 6' of clearance to get your snooze/OtherBedRelatedActivities on!

I had a 2013 taco. I wouldn't have traded it except for the lack of 4x4, needing a towing package, and a serious driveline vibration that couldn't be resolved. I decided to get the 3rd gen because I was mesmerized with the new features and the new body style, but if they'd have had a 2015 on the lot with no driveline vibes that matched my needs, I might have gone that direction if the price were right.

    TL;DR:
