Safety is a great argument to make for wanting the latest and greatest. I've seen some photos of some vicious crashes on here with third gens, and the owners all seem to walk away unscathed.

Passed the 1st along to my teen aged son and bought a new 3rd for me. I'll likely get the 1st back again in the next 2-4 years ... love that truck!

I don't see it that way. The truck gets me from point A and point B.. has power windows and has AC. I put some money into it and it stretches my dollar way further than a new car would, while still accomplishing the same thing.. get me where I need to go, haul occasionally, wheel occasionally, and most of all is reliable.. all while still having the same MPG as newer Tacos.

The $2-3k per decade is negligible to me. Looking at how much it's worth now doesn't mean anything to me... call it sentimental value or what have you. But I'd rather throw my money at other things than another more expensive thing that my truck already does.. which would eventually need the same maintenance anyways.

I would love to see some math that shows it's financially wise to purchase a new car rather than maintain an old one. For less than reliable cars there may be a case... not so with Tacoma's.

You have a good point- I loved mine too. Just was not as safe or as reliable for family... If I were single or just without kids and didntnmind the possibility of getting hit as much, Id still have it too.

I see that standpoint and totally get that for sure. Newer Tacoma's are undoubtedly much safer.. and you can't really put a price on safety.. especially of loved ones

My 02 isn't so great on long trips. It's pretty basic with crank windows no less.Basic and simple compared to the 2018. I don't worry so much with this truck long out of warranty. I doubt I'd want to own the newer gen when it's out of warranty, time will tell on how all those sensors will hold up. So if I was smart I would keep my 02, but I have that itch for a new one still. Oh and the latest dealership offered me 4500 trade in, I laughed and walked out.

There's probably a lot of ignorant people unaware of the true market for 1st gens.. they probably assume their truck is worth that anyways and then just take the deal.. not knowing they just got totally screwed. Even KBB is undervalued.

No doubt. A lot of ignorant people are out there that probably think the dealer trade in value is a "good deal"... such a shame

    +1111 for keeping 1st gen.

It’s not a 1st gen but I loved my Toyota pickup. It was a 1986 Pickup Single Cab, turbo, 4x4, 5 speed. It even had a functioning oem tachometer. I sold it because I couldn’t afford to keep up the maintenance on an older turbo while in college, the 22-RTE was not as reliable as the non-turbo engines. My 18 is super fancy but I like the rawness/visceral feeling of older vehicles. The only reason I would trade my ‘18 in for a Toyota pickup now is for safety and security purposes. Also it’s better for the environment to keep cars running as long as possible as opposed to buying new ones :)

I had a ‘99 that I totaled in 2005. The ‘05 was a double cab sold to private party and bought an ‘18 double cab. Love the ‘18 except for the constant shifting but I understand that it’s for economy. The 05 had 123000 sold it for 12k. The first person that looked at it asked if I ever drove it, it was so clean. No regrets buying the ‘18.

Definitely miss mine. I didn’t have a choice in the matter. Got totaled by girl texting and driving. I love my new truck but the first gen was basic as they come and was unstoppable. Never any problems in 15 years. Might be resurrected in the near future. It’s in my father in laws shop waiting! Someday.

I like to have a nice newer vehicle for everyday use and traveling, they come and go, but the old 2000 Prerunner 2.7 auto keeps hanging around as a spare vehicle and for hauling longer or dirty stuff. And it only has about 90,000 miles, so it should last about forever as it doesn't get driven much. Needs some leaf springs (half of one of the shorter leafs snapped off a couple years ago), and it feels like it needs brakes now, but the frame is clean and the body is straight. Anybody know a good source for some reasonably priced stock replacement leaf springs for a first gen?

I've heard good things about General Springs as stock replacements

    https://www.generalspringkc.com/pro...i0GYVqAlkiwsYnkr_mma0VqOLkYhi2kYaArBaEALw_wcB

^^ that's a link to just the passenger side spring, you'd need the drivers side as well

Edit: just realized you have a 2000 Tacoma, you'd need a different part number than what I posted since they're slightly different length than the 01-04 Tacomas.
