the bolded part says it all...

I never go off-road with my truck. I use it to haul and tow. I wanted the interior upgrades of the TRD-trim. I think the black fenders look like tupper wear, the 17 inch wheels look and drive great, and the fake skewp breaks up the long hood and looks nicer to me.

    So, I bought the Sport.

There are ample buyers for ALL Toyota models. New or used . I passed on the OR because I did not like the 16" rims, unpainted Tupperware and did not need a locker. The ride felt softer and more malleable.

I chose the Sport because of the tighter suspension. 17 inch tires. I like the look of the hood scoop (like fake pecs but still looks good to ne) The truck did not wallow as much. I can whip through a clover leaf with minimum body lean LOL..

HOWEVER IF I were looking for a 4WD to go off roading there is no choice but the OR. For street/snow driving any of the 4x4s would suffice but why leave the OR goodies on the table.

There are a lot of Sport buyers. resale should not be an issue. EVERY Tacoma sells every time. I sold my 15 Sport privately in four days to buy the 16. It cost me $3000 in depreciation for nine months, or about $333 a month to own. Not bad. I added another $3000 in options to the 16 I did not have on the 15.

There is a good market for every Tacoma

I ordered my Taco Monday. The fleet manager who places all orders ,told me he gets updates every Monday from the factory. He showed me a few orders he had placed, there were 9 steps to this process. He will forward the email form the factory to me every Monday for updates.

Is this for real or is he blowing smoke?

There is not anything special about what I ordered. It just does not have the dealer add on stuff .

Just wondering .... It's going to be a long 2 months or so.

Honestly, you can add lockers and skids and suspension.

Which would all be better then factory.

Crawl control and that other business is fine, but you'd benefit from driver training much more.

I'm getting a Sport long box because they don't offer an Off road in the long box in Canada. What I listed above is what I plan to add.

    Enjoy your truck dude!

I was in the same situation, between OR or Sport. Decided Sport. Why? Cuz the tires will spend most of their life on asphalt.

I waited 3 months for my OR. Wouldn't have had it any other way.

It's a matter of what you want/need and what you're willing to wait for.

I kinda wish I got a double cab short box sport, but they are only manual, and the offroad is only access in Canada. In the end the locker is a god send in regards to crawling and saving suspension components, but these trucks are very capable without it.

My next Taco will be a Sport, for now I'll enjoy the trails.

Suspension is null because if you lift it (you are) you're going to be upgrading it anyway. ARB lockers are better than Toyota's elocker, so you aren't really missing out on it.

Really if Toyota wouldn't have fucked over the SR/SR5 and allowed for a v6, manual, double cab thats all you'd need. Spend the extra money on better after market parts.

Driver aids are all fine and dandy, but really they're just that--aids. Learn how to drive and you won't need them.

Yes.. I just got new quicksand.. But I was over waiting. There was a super white off road siting next to my quicksand the day I bought it .. Access cab like mine. But unfortunately I had been waiting 4 months for a quicksand off road access but they are never available .. I figure I can make some changes for now and in a few years trade it in for the off road model ..I was done waiting

For those who were waiting. Did you place an order or did you wait for one to arrive at the dealer?

Next question ,did you get updates from dealer on progress of the truck being built?

I have been in a similar situation. Limited vs OR vs Sport. I have not pulled the trigger yet but had to ask myself what I really want/need (I'm sure you have asked the same).

Personally, I would see myself regret buying the Off-Road just on the premise of what I would use it for. I personally didn't like the OR suspension on the street, it was a little rough. No offense to the OR crew as I still think it's pretty badass if you're into off-roading.
I have a small family, so on-road smoothness is more necessary while being able to haul gear. Sure, I wish they put some of the OR 'bells & whistles' in the Sport but I don't see myself Off-Roading (as a hobby) anytime soon.

I've test driven the Limited, SR5 and TRDOR. So, I have a pretty good idea of what the TRD Sport would be like which is what I'd probably choose.

    Hope this helps.

I originally went in for the OR and walked out with a Sport. Just like the overall appearance better with the Sport, I actually like the hood scoop, color matched fender flares, etc., and told myself that in all honesty I'd never really need any of the stuff the OR has that the Sport doesn't. I rationalized that I'd have to look at the truck every single day compared to MAYBE, MAYBE needing those OR features once in the trucks life, and determined that the Sport was plenty capable for me, and I'd be happier with a more aesthetically pleasing truck, at least aesthetically pleasing to my eye. Also, the Sport I ended up with had the factory tonneau cover, which I like, and had some other aesthetic add-ons like tube steps, hood graphic, exhaust tip slip on, etc. that just made it look really nice. Yeah, I basically paid a premium for those features, but at the time inventory was limited, and I wanted the truck NOW, and got a great deal with all the extra aesthetic goodies I got the truck for what another dealer wanted to sell me a loaded SR5 for. Like you I plan to use the truck as a truck, but not do any serious off-roading with it, (hauling toys, people, getting back to trailheads, driving in the mountains, road trips, stinky dog in the back, towing a trailer, which I've already done from Denver to the Bay Area) and even based on what you're saying as far as how you intend to use the truck, I'll probably be doing more off-tarmac driving than you will be, and know that the way the Sport is configured stock is totally capable for 90% of us out there. Most who buy the OR probably don't even off-road with it, or nowhere near it's full potential, and just have because they want it, or they THINK they need it.

So you're just regretting buying the Sport over the OR and want the OR because of better resale value, and admit you don't need the OR for off-roading? I see a ton of 2nd Gen Sports on the road and they are really popular. I doubt taking a hit on resale will come into play if/when you ever decided to sell the truck down the line because it's a Sport. Sounds like you're just reaching for excuses to get rid of it for the OR! The things you list as being different on the OR compared to the Sport are basically options that you have already admitted that you don't really need/use/appreciate since you said you won't be doing any significant off-roading with the truck, so don't stress it. Heck, a stock SR5 is probably way more truck than most of us really need. If it was a matter of you actually NEEDING something that the OR had and the Sport didn't, then I'd say yeah, you made the wrong choice, but as a family man with kids, who isn't going to be doing serious off-roading, etc., I'd say worry about other things and just enjoy the truck! And if you don't like the hood scoop there are plenty of guys here who would be chomping at the bit to trade their non-scoop hood for yours.

You mention that you want "the most truck for your money". If that's really the case then I think the OR and Sport are probably way less of a value compared to an SR5 with a tow package, which is probably the most useful option/best option to have vs. value. Once above that level it's mostly just about unecessary bells and whistles, chest puffing, cool stickers on the side of the truck and bragging rights in my opinion, ESPECIALLY if, as you stated, you aren't off-roading with the truck, and my guess is you'll be using it mostly as your daily driver, hauling the kids to band and soccer practice, weekend car camping excursions, maybe towing a small trailer once in a while, Home Depot runs, maybe hauling a dirt bike or two if you're wife lets you get away for a weekend without the kids now and then, etc. Yeah, you don't need an OR or Sport for any of those things!

And this may me a sore spot for you, but I have to ask, since you repeatedly mention things like best value, best bang for your buck, best resale, etc., but then mention that you essentially determined after the fact that the Sport and OR are the same price, why didn't you figure this out BEFORE you took the plunge? I would think that such a fiscally-minded person would be on top of it and have done their research way before heading to the dealership.

I guess I'm less picky than others, but I don't like to wait. I've had my TRD Sport since October and have no regrets or wish I went with another model/config. I just have more important things in life to stress and not going to lose sleep over wishing I had a different trim package! While all others are waiting I've already gone on a road trip through Colorado, towed 3,000+ trailer from Denver to the Bay Area, installed a roof rack and haul my 14' Stand Up Paddle board all over, been camping with the truck several times, made numerous runs to Home Depot and also moved furniture, etc. into my new place with the truck, and got a ton of compliments about it. I'd be super bummed if I was still waiting for a truck I ordered to come in wondering when that would happen.

Excellent point, I waited 2 months for exactly what I wanted because we can ! By the way my truck is a everyday driver, an weekend explorer, and whatever else I need it to be because it is a Tacoma. Been many places since my first Toyota 4X4 in 1983.

Excellent points. Thank you. The thing is, I DID research this truck for a year. I knew what I wanted and why I wanted it. I'm not sure how I missed the price points on these two trims. But when I realized it, my knee jerk reaction was what I posted in the OP. The thing is, I cannot walk into a dealership, I'm not in the United States. We won't be moving back to the US until February, so I had to do a lot of haggling and working with dealers by just phone/email for the longest time. I simply lost track at some point and the focus became solely on the Sport, but I can't remember how that happened. I'd be happy with either truck, I know that. But again, I'd rather my money go toward function than appearance. That's really all it is. I know I sound like a whiny bitch about it, but $37k is a lot of money to make a compromise on, and that's mostly what this is all about. TRD Sport or Off Road, as long as it's a truck, has 3 pedals, hauls my shit through most terrain, has the options I wanted, I'm happy. I called the salesman to ask him to look into an order for a TRD OR with 6MT, tech, and tow. I haven't heard back from him yet, but the man still has my $1,000 deposit, so I better hear something soon. I'm fully aware that at the end of the day, it's my truck and my decision, just looking for opinions is all. Thank you all for your input, I really appreciate the discussion.

Heck, if you don't have the truck yet, and you're really sold on the OR, and you're already regretting a model you don't even have in your possession yet, than in all honesty I'd say stop feeling guilty and make them order what you really want. It's a car dealership, and they probably deal with situations like this all the time. But I will tell you I was initially in the same boat as you, thinking the Sport wasn't going to be capable enough for what I want to use the truck for, and now I'm laughing at myself because I now know the Sport is way more than I need (most guys will not admit that and like I said just want the TRD's just because!) Unless you have the truck in your possession and have signed on the dotted line, make them get you what you want if you're willing to wait. At the end of the day they aren't going to make any money off of you if they don't sell you a truck, and those guys re all about making money. So if you're willing to wait, insist that they change your order and get what you really want. Like I mentioned, I HATE waiting, so I guess I compromised by buying a truck with some extra stuff on it I didn't really want/need as skipped on the JBL (which I do not regret!), but have come to really like the stuff now, so it's a wash for me I guess. Others are more picky and you have the right to be. Don't feel guilty. I doubt the salesman feels any ounce of guilt taking your money!

I've been unable to test drive this model because, as stated earlier, I'm currently stationed overseas. I had my mother drive the new 2016 as she is the most meticulous car buyer you would ever encounter. If that thing made ANY noise, she would notice. She said she really liked how the truck drove, and it was comfortable. But she wasn't able to drive both an OR AND Sport model due to dealer inventory. I have read that there isn't any difference in ride for these trims, I've read that the Sport was a rough ride on "rougher" roads (potholes, maybe?) compared to the Off Road, and I've also read that the Off Road was harsher on the highway. Not much consistency in these reports. What do you guys think about these models in this regard? Have you test driven both trims on asphalt? Any more comparisons to highway or street driving?
